Narcissus Botanical Mix – Landscape Bag of 50 Bulbs – Planting & Care Guide

About Narcissus Botanical Mix

Narcissus Botanical Mix is a varied collection of compact, spring-flowering botanical and dwarf Narcissus, selected to provide a colourful and natural-looking display. Depending on the mixture, flowers may include shades of yellow, white, cream and orange, with a variety of trumpet and flower forms.

Botanical Narcissus are generally smaller and more natural in appearance than traditional large Daffodils. They are particularly good for naturalising, returning reliably each spring and gradually multiplying when planted in suitable conditions.

This landscape bag contains 50 bulbs, making it ideal for generous planting through borders, beneath deciduous trees, along banks or in larger naturalised displays.

Planting Guide

  • Plant in autumn, ideally from September to November.
  • Choose a position in full sun or partial shade.
  • Prefers fertile, well-drained soil.
  • Avoid permanently waterlogged ground.
  • Plant bulbs approximately 8–12cm deep, depending on bulb size.
  • As a general rule, plant at around 2–3 times the height of the bulb.
  • Position bulbs with the pointed end facing upwards.
  • Space approximately 8–12cm apart.
  • For a natural appearance, plant in informal groups and drifts rather than straight lines.
  • Water after planting if the soil is particularly dry.

Planting for Naturalising

This 50-bulb landscape pack is particularly suitable for creating larger naturalised displays.

  • Scatter handfuls of bulbs over the planting area and plant them where they fall.
  • Plant beneath deciduous trees, through suitable grassy areas or along woodland edges.
  • Use several irregular groups rather than evenly spaced rows.
  • Leave established bulbs undisturbed where possible.
  • Over time, many botanical Narcissus will multiply and form increasingly impressive colonies.

When planting through grass, avoid mowing until the Narcissus foliage has naturally yellowed after flowering.

Planting in Containers

Botanical Narcissus are also excellent for spring containers.

  • Choose a pot with adequate drainage holes.
  • Use good-quality, free-draining multipurpose compost.
  • Plant bulbs relatively close together without allowing them to touch.
  • Water thoroughly after planting.
  • Keep containers outdoors throughout winter.
  • Position in full sun or partial shade.
  • Ensure excess winter rain can drain freely.

They work particularly well in layered containers with Tulips, Muscari and Crocus.

Care & Maintenance

Botanical Narcissus are exceptionally easy to maintain.

  • Water during prolonged dry periods while plants are actively growing.
  • Container-grown bulbs require more regular watering.
  • Feed with a high-potash fertiliser after flowering if required.
  • Deadhead faded flowers if desired.
  • Leave all healthy foliage intact after flowering.
  • Allow the leaves to yellow and die back naturally.
  • Established bulbs can remain in the ground for many years.

  • Front of borders
  • Cottage gardens
  • Rockeries
  • Large patio containers
  • Wildlife-friendly gardens
  • Informal grassy areas

Botanical Narcissus combine beautifully with Snowdrops, Crocus, Muscari, Hellebores, Primroses and other early spring flowers.

Pollinator & Wildlife Value

Early-flowering Narcissus can provide useful spring interest alongside other pollinator-friendly bulbs.

  • Flowers can be visited by bees and other early pollinating insects.
  • Mixing Narcissus with Crocus, Muscari and other nectar-rich bulbs can extend the spring feeding period.
  • Naturalised bulb planting also creates valuable early-season garden habitat.

Seasonal Interest

  • Late winter: Early varieties begin producing fresh foliage and flower buds.
  • Early to mid-spring: Mixed Narcissus produce a succession of colourful flowers.
  • Late spring: Foliage continues feeding the bulbs after flowering.
  • Summer: Plants become dormant underground until the following growing season.

After Flowering

  • Remove faded flowers if desired.
  • Do not cut, tie or knot the green foliage.
  • Allow leaves to remain for at least six weeks after flowering or until completely yellow.
  • Once the foliage has naturally died back, it can be removed.
  • Established bulbs can be left undisturbed to multiply.
  • Congested clumps can be lifted and divided while dormant.

Common Problems

Narcissus are generally among the most dependable spring bulbs.

  • Waterlogging can cause bulbs to rot.
  • Slugs and snails may damage emerging shoots.
  • Narcissus bulb fly can occasionally affect bulbs.
  • Poor flowering may occur when established clumps become overcrowded.
  • Removing foliage prematurely can reduce flowering the following year.
  • Very deep shade can result in weaker flowering.

With its 50 mixed botanical Narcissus bulbs, this Landscape Bag is an excellent choice for creating a colourful, natural-looking spring display. Compact, hardy and capable of returning year after year, the mixture is particularly well suited to naturalising in Irish gardens, where it can gradually develop into larger drifts of early spring colour.
