Tulipa Darwin Hybrid Mixed – Landscape Bag of 50 Bulbs – Planting & Care Guide

About Tulipa Darwin Hybrid Mixed

Tulipa Darwin Hybrid Mixed is a colourful selection of large-flowered Darwin Hybrid Tulips, renowned for their tall, sturdy stems, substantial cup-shaped blooms and impressive garden performance.

The mixture typically provides a vibrant range of colours including red, pink, yellow, orange and other complementary shades. Darwin Hybrids are among the best Tulips for creating bold blocks of colour in beds and borders, particularly when planted in generous groups.

They generally flower in mid to late spring, with strong stems that cope well with typical spring weather. Darwin Hybrids are also among the Tulip groups most likely to return and flower successfully in subsequent years when grown in suitable conditions.

This landscape bag contains 50 bulbs, making it ideal for mass planting.

Planting Guide

  • Plant in autumn, ideally from October to December.
  • November is particularly suitable for planting Tulips.
  • Choose a position in full sun or light partial shade.
  • Prefers fertile, well-drained soil.
  • Avoid ground that remains waterlogged during winter.
  • Plant bulbs approximately 10–15cm deep.
  • For better perennial performance, planting towards the deeper end of this range can be beneficial.
  • Position bulbs with the pointed end facing upwards.
  • Space approximately 10–12cm apart.
  • Water after planting if the soil is particularly dry.

Planting for a Landscape Display

With 50 bulbs, this pack is excellent for creating substantial areas of spring colour.

  • Plant in generous groups or informal drifts rather than individually.
  • Divide the bulbs into several groups throughout a large border for repeated colour.
  • For maximum impact, plant bulbs relatively densely within each group.
  • Avoid rigid straight rows unless creating a formal display.
  • Plant between perennials that will later grow and disguise the fading Tulip foliage.

Planting in Containers

Darwin Hybrid Tulips can also create spectacular displays in larger containers.

  • Choose a deep container with adequate drainage holes.
  • Use good-quality multipurpose compost with added grit for drainage.
  • Plant bulbs fairly close together without allowing them to touch.
  • Position bulbs approximately 10–15cm deep.
  • Water thoroughly after planting.
  • Keep containers outdoors throughout winter.
  • Position in a sunny or lightly shaded location.
  • Ensure excess winter rain drains freely.

They can also form the lower layer of a bulb lasagne, with smaller bulbs such as Muscari and Crocus planted above them.

Care & Maintenance

Darwin Hybrid Tulips require relatively little maintenance.

  • Water during prolonged dry periods while actively growing.
  • Container-grown plants require more regular watering.
  • Feed with a high-potash fertiliser as foliage develops if bulbs are being retained.
  • Deadhead flowers after they fade to prevent unnecessary seed production.
  • Leave all healthy foliage intact after flowering.
  • Allow leaves to yellow and die back naturally.

Darwin Hybrid Tulips combine beautifully with Narcissus, Muscari, Wallflowers, Forget-me-nots, Violas and spring-flowering perennials.

Cut Flowers

Darwin Hybrids are particularly good for cutting.

  • Their long, sturdy stems are excellent for vases.
  • Cut when the flower buds are coloured but not completely open.
  • Use clean, sharp secateurs.
  • Leave as much foliage on the plant as possible if you want the bulb to flower again.

Seasonal Interest

  • Winter: Bulbs remain dormant underground.
  • Early spring: Strong green foliage emerges.
  • Mid to late spring: Large flowers create a spectacular mixed-colour display.
  • Early summer: Foliage continues feeding the bulbs before naturally dying back.

After Flowering

  • Deadhead faded flowers.
  • Do not cut off the green leaves after flowering.
  • Allow foliage to yellow and die back naturally.
  • This helps replenish the bulbs for the following year.
  • Darwin Hybrid Tulips can be left in well-drained ground and are generally better at returning than many other Tulip groups.
  • If flowering declines after several years, additional fresh bulbs can be planted in autumn.

Common Problems

  • Waterlogging can cause bulb rot.
  • Slugs and snails may damage emerging shoots.
  • Squirrels and other animals can occasionally disturb newly planted bulbs.
  • Tulip fire can cause distorted shoots and spotted foliage.
  • Poor flowering in subsequent years can result from heavy shade or removing foliage too early.
  • Very exposed sites can occasionally damage tall flowers during severe spring weather.

With its 50 large-flowering Darwin Hybrid Tulip bulbs, this Landscape Bag is ideal for creating a spectacular mass of spring colour. Their large blooms, strong stems and better-than-average ability to return in future years make Darwin Hybrids an excellent choice for substantial Tulip displays in Irish gardens
