Overview of Lavandula angustifolia 'Hidcote'
Lavandula angustifolia 'Hidcote', commonly known as English Lavender 'Hidcote', is one of the most popular and reliable lavender varieties for UK gardens. Known for its compact form, silvery-grey foliage, and deep violet-blue flowers, it is a favourite for borders, edging, herb gardens, and container planting. ‘Hidcote’ is highly fragrant and adored by pollinators, making it a staple for both ornamental and wildlife-friendly gardens.
This hardy, drought-tolerant perennial not only adds a classic Mediterranean feel to the landscape but also offers long-lasting flowers perfect for drying and using in sachets, wreaths, and culinary preparations.
Planting & Positioning
Establishing Lavandula ‘Hidcote’ in the right location is key to its success. It is a plant that thrives on minimal fuss when its basic needs are met.
-
Planting Time: Best planted in spring or early autumn, allowing time to establish before extreme weather.
-
Sunlight: Requires full sun to thrive. Choose a bright, open location with plenty of air circulation.
-
Soil Requirements:
-
Prefers well-drained, alkaline to neutral soil.
-
Avoid heavy, clay-rich, or consistently wet soils.
-
Improve drainage by adding grit or horticultural sand to the planting hole or potting mix.
-
-
Spacing: Plant 30–45 cm (12–18 inches) apart to allow room for growth and air movement.
-
Container Growing:
-
Choose pots with drainage holes and use a gritty compost mix.
-
Ideal for sunny patios, terraces, and front door arrangements.
-
-
Location Tip: Avoid planting too close to other dense shrubs or structures that block airflow. Good air movement helps reduce disease.
Care & Maintenance
Lavender ‘Hidcote’ is low maintenance once established, but the following practices will help keep it looking and performing its best year after year.
-
Watering:
-
Water sparingly once established. Too much moisture can lead to root rot.
-
During the first growing season, water moderately to help establish roots.
-
For container plants, water when the top few inches of soil are dry.
-
-
Feeding:
-
Avoid high-nitrogen fertilisers, which can promote leggy growth and reduce flowering.
-
If needed, use a low-nitrogen, high-potash feed in spring to boost blooming.
-
-
Pruning:
-
Annual pruning is essential to maintain shape and prevent the plant from becoming woody.
-
Trim back by about one-third after flowering in late summer or early autumn.
-
Avoid cutting into old wood, as lavender does not regenerate well from bare stems.
-
-
Pests & Problems:
-
Generally pest-free and disease-resistant.
-
Root rot may occur in waterlogged conditions; ensure excellent drainage.
-
Occasionally affected by spittlebugs (harmless but can be rinsed off).
-
-
Winter Care:
-
Hardy to -15°C, suitable for most parts of the UK.
-
In colder or wetter areas, protect with a mulch of grit to improve drainage.
-
For container plants, move to a sheltered spot or elevate pots off the ground in winter.
-
