Planting Conditions and Ideal Location

• Light Requirements: All lavender varieties thrive in full sun. They require at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily for strong growth, abundant flowers, and good oil production.

• Soil Preferences: Prefer free-draining soil with low to moderate fertility. Sandy or loamy soils are ideal. Heavy clay should be improved with grit or organic matter to enhance drainage.

• pH Level: Best grown in neutral to alkaline soils (pH 6.5–7.5). Avoid acidic soils or add garden lime if necessary.

• Moisture Needs: Lavender is drought-tolerant once established. Water well in the first season, then only during prolonged dry periods.

• Planting Time: Plant in spring or early autumn to allow roots to establish before flowering or winter cold.

• Spacing: Space plants 30–60 cm apart, depending on the variety, to allow airflow and prevent fungal problems.

• Positioning Tips: Ideal for herb gardens, sunny borders, gravel gardens, pots, and edging. Also well-suited to coastal planting thanks to its salt tolerance.

Routine Care, Feeding, and Seasonal Maintenance

• Watering: Water young plants regularly during establishment. Mature plants prefer drier conditions and should not be overwatered.

• Feeding: Lavender does not require heavy feeding. Apply a light dose of a balanced, low-nitrogen fertilizer in early spring if growth is weak.

• Mulching: Avoid heavy organic mulches that trap moisture around the base—use gravel or grit instead to keep the crown dry.

• Pruning:

  • Annual Prune: After flowering (late summer), trim back spent flower stalks and lightly shape the plant, avoiding cutting into old woody stems.

  • Spring Tidy: Remove any winter damage in early spring.

• Winter Care: Most lavenders are hardy, but in very cold or wet regions, provide shelter or grow in containers that can be moved to a frost-free spot.

• Pest and Disease Resistance: Generally pest-free and resistant to deer and rabbits. Poor drainage can cause root rot; ensure soil is free-draining.

• Deadheading: Remove spent blooms to encourage further flowering and maintain a neat appearance.

Flowers, Foliage, and Garden Uses

• Flowers: Lavender blooms vary in colour from pale lilac to deep purple, with some pink and white varieties available. Flowers are highly aromatic and attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators.

• Foliage: Evergreen, often silver-grey or green, providing year-round texture and contrast in the garden.

• Fragrance: Both foliage and flowers are richly scented, making them excellent for cut flowers, dried arrangements, and potpourri.

• Growth Habit and Size: Depending on the variety, plants can range from 20 cm compact dwarf forms to 1 m tall, bushy shrubs.

• Flowering Period: Most varieties flower from late spring to mid-summer, with some repeat blooming into early autumn.

• Design Uses:

  • Borders and edging for structure and fragrance.

  • Mass planting for a striking summer display.

  • Container planting for patios and entrances.

  • Herb gardens for culinary and medicinal use.

• Companion Plants: Works well with roses, nepeta, echinacea, salvia, and other sun-loving perennials.

• Culinary Uses: Flower buds can be used sparingly in baking, teas, and savoury dishes for a unique floral flavour.

The in-Store delivery charge will vary compared with online, in-store delivery charge is done on a case by case basis.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
