About Layer Planting Orange

Layer Planting Orange – 25 Bulbs is a coordinated collection of spring-flowering bulbs selected to create a beautiful orange-themed display with flowers appearing at different heights and stages through spring.

Designed especially for layered or “lasagne” planting, the bulbs are planted at different depths within the same container. Larger, later-flowering bulbs are positioned towards the bottom, with progressively smaller and earlier-flowering bulbs above them. Each type grows naturally through the layers, creating a colourful and long-lasting spring display from a single pot.

The pack contains 25 bulbs and is ideal for patio pots, containers and compact garden spaces.

How to Layer Plant the Bulbs

Choose a reasonably deep container with plenty of drainage holes.

• Add a layer of good-quality, free-draining compost to the bottom.
• Plant the largest bulbs in the lowest layer, generally around 15–20cm deep.
• Cover with approximately 5cm of compost.
• Position the medium-sized bulbs as the second layer.
• Add another layer of compost.
• Plant the smallest bulbs closest to the surface, generally around 5–8cm deep.
• Bulbs can be planted relatively close together but should not be touching.
• Position bulbs with their pointed ends facing upwards.
• Cover with compost and water thoroughly after planting.

The shoots will naturally grow around the bulbs above them and emerge at the surface.

Planting Guide

• Plant in autumn, ideally from September to December.
• Position containers in full sun or light partial shade.
• Use fertile, well-drained compost.
• Ensure containers have adequate drainage holes.
• Adding horticultural grit can improve drainage.
• Water thoroughly after planting.
• Keep outdoors during winter.
• Avoid allowing the container to remain permanently waterlogged.

Care & Maintenance

Layered bulb containers are very easy to maintain.

• Keep compost lightly moist during prolonged dry periods.
• Increase watering as active growth begins in spring.
• Check containers regularly during warm spring weather.
• Feed with a high-potash fertiliser once foliage is actively growing if desired.
• Deadhead faded flowers to maintain an attractive display.
• Leave green foliage in place after flowering.

Seasonal Interest

The main advantage of layered planting is the potential for a succession of flowers rather than one short flowering period.

• Early bulbs begin emerging as winter ends.
• Different varieties flower in succession during spring.
• Taller bulbs emerge through the lower-growing varieties.

After Flowering

• Remove faded flowers as each variety finishes.
• Do not remove green foliage prematurely.
• Allow the leaves to yellow and die back naturally.
• This allows the bulbs to replenish their energy reserves.
• Once all foliage has died back, watering can be substantially reduced.
• Bulbs can be replanted into the garden or retained for another season where appropriate.

Common Problems

• Waterlogging is the biggest risk with layered bulb containers.
• Always ensure excess water can escape freely from the bottom of the pot.
• Slugs and snails may damage emerging shoots.
• Squirrels and other animals may occasionally disturb newly planted containers.
• Planting bulbs upside down or excessively deeply can delay emergence.
• Removing foliage too soon after flowering can weaken bulbs.

Standard Delivery is FREE on orders over €250*

All standard deliveries will be completed within 5-7 working days via DPD Couriers, any delay to this delivery time, the customer will be notified by One of our staff.

The in-Store delivery charge will vary compared with online, in-store delivery charge is done on a case by case basis.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
