About Layer Planting Purple

Layer Planting Purple – 25 Bulbs is a coordinated collection of spring-flowering bulbs selected to create a beautiful purple-themed display over an extended flowering period.

Designed for layer or “bulb lasagne” planting, different types and sizes of bulbs are planted at different depths within the same container. The bulbs emerge and flower at different stages, producing successive waves of purple, violet and complementary spring colour from a single pot.

Each pack contains 25 bulbs, making it ideal for patio pots, doorstep displays, balconies and smaller garden spaces.

How to Layer Plant the Bulbs

Choose a reasonably deep container with plenty of drainage holes.

• Add a layer of good-quality, free-draining compost.
• Plant the largest bulbs in the lowest layer, generally around 15–20cm deep.
• Cover with approximately 5cm of compost.
• Position the medium-sized bulbs in the next layer.
• Add another layer of compost.
• Plant the smallest bulbs nearest the surface, generally around 5–8cm deep.
• Stagger each layer so bulbs are not positioned directly above one another.
• Bulbs can be planted fairly close together but should not touch.
• Position pointed ends upwards where clearly visible.
• Cover with compost and water thoroughly.

The shoots will naturally grow around the bulbs above them as they emerge.

Planting Guide

• Plant in autumn, ideally from September to December.
• Position in full sun or light partial shade.
• Use fertile, well-drained compost or soil.
• Good drainage is essential during wet Irish winters.
• Water thoroughly immediately after planting.
• Keep containers outdoors throughout winter.
• Water occasionally if conditions are unusually dry.
• Never allow containers to remain permanently waterlogged.

Care & Maintenance

Layered bulb displays require very little maintenance.

• Keep compost slightly moist once active growth begins.
• Water container-grown bulbs more frequently during dry spring weather.
• A high-potash feed can be applied once plants are actively growing.
• Deadhead individual flowers as they fade.
• Leave healthy foliage in place after flowering.
• Allow all leaves to yellow and die back naturally.

Seasonal Interest

The main advantage of layered planting is the succession of flowers produced from one container.

• Early bulbs begin emerging towards the end of winter.
• Smaller bulbs provide the first flushes of colour.
• Different varieties flower progressively throughout spring.
• Taller bulbs emerge through the lower-growing plants.

After Flowering

• Remove faded flower heads as each variety finishes.
• Do not remove foliage while it remains green.
• Allow the leaves to yellow and die back naturally.
• This enables the bulbs to replenish their energy reserves.
• Reduce watering once all foliage has died back.
• Suitable bulbs can be transferred into the garden after the display has finished.
• Many spring bulbs can return and flower again in subsequent years.

Common Problems

• Waterlogging is the biggest risk with layered bulb containers.
• Ensure drainage holes remain clear throughout winter.
• Slugs and snails may damage emerging shoots.
• Squirrels and other animals may occasionally disturb newly planted bulbs.
• Containers can dry out quickly once active spring growth begins.
• Removing foliage too soon after flowering can weaken bulbs and reduce future flowering.

Standard Delivery is FREE on orders over €250*

All standard deliveries will be completed within 5-7 working days via DPD Couriers, any delay to this delivery time, the customer will be notified by One of our staff.

The in-Store delivery charge will vary compared with online, in-store delivery charge is done on a case by case basis. 

* Only mainland Ireland addresses qualify for free delivery.
 

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.
 

Click & Collect

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
