This variety is ideal for gardeners who want a high-quality, all-purpose potato. Whether you're looking to roast, mash, or boil your potatoes, Kerr’s Pink has you covered. Below is a comprehensive planting and care guide to ensure that your Kerr’s Pink potatoes thrive.
Why Choose Kerr’s Pink Seed Potatoes?
Kerr’s Pink is a versatile and high-yielding main crop potato that produces excellent results in various growing conditions. These potatoes are renowned for their firm, creamy texture and delicate flavor. Their versatility in the kitchen makes them a popular choice for both home gardeners and professional chefs.
- Harvest Time: Approximately 16–20 weeks after planting, making it a reliable main crop potato.
- Height: Reaches up to 60–75cm (24–30 inches).
- Spread: Typically grows to around 40–50cm (16–20 inches) in width.
- Texture: A floury to waxy texture, perfect for boiling, mashing, and roasting.
- Culinary Uses: Excellent for mashed potatoes, chips, roasts, and salads.
- Storage: Can store for several months in a cool, dark, and dry environment.
How to Plant Kerr’s Pink Seed Potatoes
Planting Kerr’s Pink potatoes is simple, and with proper care, you’ll be rewarded with a plentiful harvest.
Pre-Planting Preparation
-
Chitting: To encourage strong and healthy growth, chit your seed potatoes before planting. Place the seed potatoes in a cool, light space with the "eyes" facing upwards for about 2-4 weeks. This will allow the sprouts to emerge and give your potatoes a head start.
-
Soil Preparation: Choose a well-drained, fertile site with full sunlight. Kerr’s Pink potatoes thrive in soil that is rich in organic matter, so work in some compost or well-rotted manure before planting to ensure the best conditions for growth. Aim for soil with a pH of 5.5 to 6.5.
Planting Instructions
-
When to Plant: Plant your Kerr’s Pink seed potatoes in late March to early April, once the threat of frost has passed, and the soil temperature has warmed up. Avoid planting them in areas that are prone to frost, as potatoes are sensitive to cold weather.
-
Planting Depth and Spacing:
- Spacing: Space your seed potatoes around 30cm (12 inches) apart in the row, allowing enough room for healthy tuber growth.
- Row Spacing: Space rows approximately 60cm (24 inches) apart to provide adequate space for the plants to grow and develop.
- Planting Depth: Plant the potatoes around 10–15cm (4–6 inches) deep, ensuring that the eyes are facing upwards to encourage sprouting.
Maintenance Tips for Kerr’s Pink Potatoes
Kerr’s Pink potatoes are relatively easy to maintain, but there are a few key steps to ensure a healthy crop and good yields.
Watering and Feeding
-
Watering: Ensure your potatoes receive consistent moisture throughout the growing season, especially during tuber formation. Water your Kerr’s Pink potatoes deeply once a week, ensuring that the soil remains moist but not waterlogged. Avoid watering during the hottest part of the day to minimize evaporation.
-
Feeding: Fertilize your Kerr’s Pink potatoes with a balanced feed, especially in the early stages of growth. Once the plants are about 15cm (6 inches) tall, apply a high-potassium fertilizer to encourage strong tuber development and improve the quality of the potatoes.
Earthing Up and Mulching
-
Earthing Up: As the plants grow, mound soil around the base of the stems to "earth up" the potatoes. This helps protect the developing tubers from being exposed to sunlight, which can turn them green and toxic.
-
Mulching: Apply a layer of mulch around the base of the plants to retain moisture and prevent weeds. Straw, grass clippings, or compost work well as mulch and help to create a stable growing environment.
Pest and Disease Control
-
Weeding: Keep the area around your Kerr’s Pink potatoes free from weeds, as they can compete for essential nutrients and water. Be careful when weeding to avoid damaging the developing roots or tubers.
-
Pests: Regularly check your potato plants for common pests, such as aphids, slugs, and potato beetles. Remove pests by hand or use natural remedies to protect your crop.
Harvesting and Storing Kerr’s Pink Potatoes
When to Harvest
Kerr’s Pink potatoes are typically ready for harvest after about 16–20 weeks, depending on the growing conditions. You’ll know they’re ready when the foliage begins to die back, and the skins of the potatoes have become firm and fully matured.
How to Harvest
-
Carefully dig around the base of the plant with a fork or spade, taking care not to damage the tubers. Lift the potatoes gently from the soil and place them on the surface to dry out before storing.
-
After harvesting, allow the potatoes to dry in a cool, dry place for several hours to reduce the moisture content, which helps with storage.
Storing Kerr’s Pink Potatoes
- For best results, store your Kerr’s Pink potatoes in a cool, dark, and well-ventilated area. A dry shed or basement works well. Keep them in a mesh bag or crate to allow for proper airflow and prevent rotting.
