Introduction to Melissa officinalis (Lemon Balm)
Melissa officinalis, commonly known as Lemon Balm, is a hardy herbaceous perennial in the mint family (Lamiaceae), prized for its fragrant lemon-scented leaves and multiple uses in culinary, medicinal, and ornamental gardening. It’s a firm favourite among gardeners thanks to its resilience, versatility, and attractiveness to pollinators like bees and butterflies.
Lemon Balm is easy to grow, low-maintenance, and suitable for borders, herb gardens, containers, or even mixed into ornamental beds. It can also be harvested and used fresh or dried for teas, salads, and herbal remedies.
Planting and Growing Tips
Lemon Balm is a great choice for both new and experienced gardeners. To ensure healthy growth, follow these basic planting and care guidelines:
-
Positioning:
-
Prefers a sunny or part-shaded location.
-
Can tolerate full shade but will have less aroma and slower growth.
-
-
Soil Requirements:
-
Grows best in well-drained, moderately fertile soil.
-
Will tolerate poorer soils but thrives when compost is added before planting.
-
-
Spacing:
-
Allow 30–45 cm between plants, as it can spread and form dense clumps.
-
-
Container Growing:
-
Perfect for pots and containers.
-
Choose a deep pot with good drainage and use general-purpose compost.
-
-
Planting Time:
-
Can be planted in spring or early autumn.
-
Water thoroughly after planting to help establish roots.
-
-
Companion Planting:
-
Works well near vegetables and fruit trees, where its scent may deter pests.
-
Seasonal Care and Maintenance
Lemon Balm is known for its vigorous growth. With some basic care, it will remain healthy and productive year after year.
-
Watering:
-
Keep soil consistently moist, especially in hot, dry weather.
-
Avoid waterlogging, particularly in pots.
-
-
Feeding:
-
Not a heavy feeder.
-
Apply a balanced organic fertiliser in spring if needed.
-
Overfeeding can reduce the intensity of the lemon scent.
-
-
Pruning and Harvesting:
-
Regular harvesting encourages fresh new growth.
-
Trim back the plant by one-third in mid-summer to avoid flowering and seed dispersal, which can make it invasive.
-
For drying, harvest leaves before flowering for the best flavour and oil content.
-
-
Winter Care:
-
Fully hardy in most climates.
-
In late autumn, cut back stems to just above ground level.
-
Apply a mulch of compost or leaf mould in colder areas for added protection.
-
-
Pest and Disease Resistance:
-
Generally pest-free and disease-resistant.
-
May be susceptible to powdery mildew in humid or overcrowded conditions—ensure good air circulation.
-
