Positioning & Light Requirements
-
Monstera deliciosa, commonly known as the Swiss Cheese Plant, is a striking indoor foliage plant admired for its large, glossy, split leaves.
-
Place in bright, indirect light for best growth. A position near an east- or west-facing window is ideal.
-
Avoid direct midday sunlight, which can scorch the leaves and cause brown patches.
-
Tolerates moderate light conditions, but slower growth and smaller leaves may occur in lower light.
-
Rotate the plant every few weeks to encourage even growth and prevent leaning towards the light source.
-
Keep away from cold draughts, radiators, and sudden temperature changes.
-
Ideal room temperature is between 18–27°C.
-
Avoid temperatures below 10–12°C, as this can cause leaf damage.
Monstera deliciosa naturally grows as a climbing plant in tropical forests. Providing a moss pole or support will encourage larger leaves and more dramatic natural splits as the plant matures.
Watering, Humidity & Feeding
-
Water when the top 2–3 cm of compost feels dry to the touch.
-
Ensure the pot has drainage holes, as Monstera does not tolerate sitting in water.
-
Water thoroughly, allowing excess water to drain away completely.
-
Reduce watering during autumn and winter when growth naturally slows.
-
Overwatering can lead to yellowing leaves and root rot.
-
Underwatering may cause drooping or curling leaves.
-
Prefers moderate to high humidity but adapts well to normal indoor conditions.
-
Increase humidity by misting occasionally or placing the pot on a tray of pebbles and water.
-
Feed every 2–4 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser.
-
Do not feed during the winter rest period.
Wipe leaves gently with a damp cloth to remove dust and maintain their natural shine. Clean leaves allow the plant to photosynthesise more efficiently.
Repotting, Pruning & General Care
-
Repot every 1–2 years in spring when roots begin to outgrow the container.
-
Choose a pot only slightly larger than the current one to prevent excess compost retaining too much moisture.
-
Use a free-draining, peat-free houseplant compost.
-
Support aerial roots by guiding them into the compost or attaching them to a moss pole.
-
Prune back leggy growth in spring to maintain a balanced shape.
-
Remove any yellow or damaged leaves at the base using clean, sharp secateurs.
-
Monstera can be propagated from stem cuttings that include at least one node and aerial root.
-
Monitor for common houseplant pests such as spider mites, scale insects, or mealybugs.
-
Keep foliage clean and inspect regularly to catch issues early.
With the right balance of light, water, and occasional feeding, Monstera deliciosa is an easy-care indoor plant that makes a bold, architectural statement in homes, offices, and interior spaces
