  • Flowering season: Mid-spring (March to April).

  • Foliage: Strap-like, mid-green leaves.

  • Soil: Fertile, well-drained soil is ideal; tolerates most soil types if not waterlogged.

  • Hardiness: Fully hardy, thriving in UK and Irish gardens.

  • Uses: Borders, containers, lawns, naturalised drifts, and as cut flowers.

Its bold colouring makes it a perfect companion to blue spring flowers such as muscari or hyacinths, creating striking colour contrasts in the garden.

Care Guide

Narcissus ‘Red Devon’ is low-maintenance and thrives with just a little seasonal care.

Planting

  • When to plant: Plant bulbs in autumn (September to November) before frost sets in.

  • Depth & spacing: Plant 10–15cm deep and 10cm apart.

  • Grouping: For best effect, plant in groups of 6–10 or more for a vibrant display.

  • Containers: Use multipurpose compost with added grit for drainage.

Watering & Feeding

  • Water after planting to help bulbs settle.

  • During spring growth, water if conditions are very dry.

  • Feed with a balanced fertiliser after flowering to strengthen bulbs for next year.

Aftercare

  • Deadhead spent flowers to prevent energy being wasted on seed production.

  • Allow leaves to die back naturally – they are vital for feeding the bulb.

  • Avoid tying or cutting foliage prematurely.

  • Lift and divide clumps every 3–4 years in summer if overcrowded.

Protection

  • Fully hardy; no winter protection needed in the ground.

  • Raise containers on feet to avoid waterlogging in wet weather.
