Overview and Features

Nepeta 'Walker's Low' is an award-winning, herbaceous perennial prized for its soft, aromatic grey-green foliage and clouds of violet-blue flowers that bloom profusely from late spring through early autumn. Despite the name, ‘Walker’s Low’ is not a low-growing plant—it typically reaches around 60–75 cm tall and wide, forming a graceful, arching mound that adds movement and softness to garden borders.

This cultivar is particularly beloved for its long flowering season, low maintenance needs, and strong pollinator attraction. It’s drought-tolerant once established, deer- and rabbit-resistant, and thrives in a wide range of garden conditions.

  • Produces lavender-blue flowers from May to September

  • Aromatic silver-green foliage deters deer and rabbits

  • Forms a neat, cascading mound: approx. 60–75 cm tall x 75–90 cm wide

  • Attracts bees, butterflies, and other beneficial pollinators

  • Winner of the RHS Award of Garden Merit

Growing Conditions and Maintenance

Nepeta 'Walker's Low' is a reliable and easy-care perennial that flourishes in sunny, free-draining sites.

    • Performs best in full sun

    • Can tolerate light shade, but flowering may be reduced

  • Soil Preferences:

    • Prefers well-drained, moderately fertile soil

    • Tolerant of chalk, loam, sand, and poor soils

    • Avoid wet or heavy clay areas

  • Watering:

    • Water regularly until established

    • Once established, it is highly drought-tolerant

    • Overwatering can lead to floppy growth or root rot

  • Feeding:

    • Requires minimal feeding

    • Apply a general-purpose fertiliser in early spring, if needed

  • Pruning and Maintenance:

    • Cut back by half after first flowering to encourage a second flush of blooms

    • Trim down to the base in late autumn or early spring

    • Divide clumps every 3–4 years to rejuvenate and propagate

Seasonal Interest and Garden Uses

Nepeta 'Walker's Low' is a versatile, long-season performer that blends beautifully into many styles of planting, especially cottage, Mediterranean, and wildlife gardens.

  • Flowering Period:

    • Main bloom from late May to July, with potential repeat blooms into September

    • Flowers held in loose, airy spikes that sway gently in the breeze

  • Garden Design Uses:

    • Excellent as an edging plant, along paths, or in mass plantings

    • Pairs beautifully with roses, lavender, salvias, echinacea, and ornamental grasses

    • Softens the edge of raised beds, gravel gardens, or sunny borders

    • Works well with Perovskia, Stachys, Achillea, Rudbeckia, Sedum, and Allium

    • A natural foil for bold colours like reds, oranges, or deep purples
