Description

Pennisetum alopecuroides ‘Moudry’ is a striking ornamental grass best known for its dramatic, dark purple-black flower heads and strong architectural presence. Often described as one of the most impressive fountain grasses, it brings depth, movement, and contrast to borders and containers from late summer through winter. In a garden centre setting, ‘Moudry’ is a high-impact plant that appeals to customers looking for bold structure and long-lasting seasonal interest.

Flower Colour, Form & Seasonal Impact

The standout feature of Pennisetum ‘Moudry’ is its distinctive flower plumes. From late summer, thick, upright stems rise above the arching green foliage, topped with large, bottlebrush-shaped flower heads in deep smoky purple to near-black tones. These dark plumes create a dramatic contrast against lighter planting and catch the light beautifully as they mature.

Key visual selling points:

  • Deep purple-black bottlebrush flower heads

  • Tall, upright flowering stems

  • Arching green foliage forming a fountain shape

  • Strong late summer to autumn interest

  • Excellent winter structure if left uncut

As autumn progresses, the foliage softens to warm golden tones, extending the plant’s appeal well beyond the flowering period.

Growing Conditions & Maintenance

Pennisetum alopecuroides ‘Moudry’ is a hardy, reliable ornamental grass that thrives in a sunny position. While slightly larger than some other varieties, it remains well-behaved and easy to manage in most garden settings. It prefers free-draining soil but is tolerant of a wide range of conditions once established.

Care and growing guidance:

  • Plant in full sun for best flower colour

  • Grows best in well-drained soil

  • Suitable for borders and large containers

  • Drought tolerant once established

  • Cut back old growth in late winter or early spring

Leaving the plant intact over winter protects the crown and allows customers to enjoy its structure and texture during the colder months.

Garden Uses & Retail Appeal

From a retail point of view, Pennisetum ‘Moudry’ is a statement plant that works well as a focal point or in repeated groups for rhythm and impact. Its dark flower heads make it especially valuable for contemporary and contrasting planting schemes.

Popular uses and selling ideas:

  • Feature plant in mixed and perennial borders

  • Pairing with pale or silver-leaf plants for contrast

  • Gravel and prairie-style gardens

  • Autumn and winter interest planting

  • Contemporary container displays

In garden centres, ‘Moudry’ performs particularly well when displayed in flower, instantly drawing attention on the bench. Its bold colouring, strong structure, and low maintenance needs make Pennisetum alopecuroides ‘Moudry’ a premium ornamental grass that delivers visual drama and excellent long-term value for customers.
