Photinia fraseri ‘Pink Marble’ – Colourful Evergreen with Variegated Foliage
The Photinia fraseri ‘Pink Marble’ is a striking evergreen shrub that offers a unique twist on the classic Photinia. While many photinias are grown for their vibrant red new growth, ‘Pink Marble’ adds an extra dimension with its beautifully variegated foliage. Leaves are splashed with shades of pink, cream, and green, creating a lively and eye-catching display that changes throughout the year.
Compact and bushy, it’s a perfect choice for hedges, mixed borders, or large containers, adding both colour and structure to the garden in every season. With its hardy nature and minimal care needs, ‘Pink Marble’ is an easy way to introduce long-lasting beauty into your outdoor space.
General Information
Photinia fraseri ‘Pink Marble’ is a modern cultivar, specially bred for its vibrant colour and striking variegation.
-
Habit: Dense, upright evergreen shrub with a naturally bushy form.
-
Height & spread: Typically 2–3m tall and 1.5–2m wide, but can be kept smaller with pruning.
-
Foliage: Young shoots emerge bright pink, then mature into variegated leaves with green centres edged in creamy-white and flushed with pink tones.
-
Flowers: In late spring to early summer, clusters of small white flowers may appear if plants are left untrimmed.
-
Position: Thrives in full sun to partial shade; the best variegation and pink colouring occur in brighter spots.
-
Soil: Prefers fertile, well-drained soil, though it will tolerate clay or chalk if not waterlogged.
-
Hardiness: Fully hardy in the UK and Ireland, tolerant of frost and cold winters.
-
Uses: Excellent for hedging, screening, or as a feature shrub in borders and containers.
With its colourful, variegated foliage, ‘Pink Marble’ provides year-round interest and makes a lively alternative to traditional green-leaved hedges.
Care Guide
Photinia ‘Pink Marble’ is robust and easy to care for, needing little more than occasional pruning to maintain its vibrant display.
Planting
-
When to plant: Best planted in spring or autumn, though container-grown plants can be planted at any time of year.
-
Depth & spacing: Plant at the same depth as in the pot; space 1–1.5m apart for hedging.
-
Preparation: Enrich the soil with compost or well-rotted manure before planting.
Watering & Feeding
-
Water well during the first year until plants are established.
-
Once mature, it is reasonably drought-tolerant but will produce better foliage colour with occasional deep watering in dry periods.
-
Apply a slow-release fertiliser in spring to encourage strong growth and vibrant leaves.
Pruning & Maintenance
-
Trim lightly in spring or summer to maintain a compact shape and encourage fresh pink growth.
-
Avoid cutting into old wood – always prune back to leafy stems.
-
Remove any dead, damaged, or overcrowded branches in early spring.
-
Mulch annually with compost or bark to conserve moisture and improve soil health.
Protection
-
Fully hardy and generally pest-free.
-
May develop leaf spot in damp conditions – improve airflow and avoid overcrowding to reduce risk.
