Overview and Features

Physocarpus opulifolius 'Tiny Wine' is a compact, deciduous shrub prized for its deeply coloured foliage, dense, upright habit, and clusters of soft pink-white flowers. A modern cultivar of the native North American ninebark, it is an excellent choice for small gardens, urban planting, or mixed borders, offering multi-season interest with very little maintenance.

'Tiny Wine' is especially noted for its rich burgundy foliage, which holds colour throughout the growing season and intensifies in autumn. In late spring to early summer, it produces abundant button-like flowers that contrast beautifully with the dark leaves. The textured bark, revealed in winter, adds further ornamental value.

Growing Conditions and Maintenance

'Tiny Wine' is a robust, adaptable shrub that thrives in a range of garden situations.

• Light Requirements:

  • Best colour and flowering in full sun

  • Will tolerate light shade, but foliage may be greener and flowering reduced

• Soil Preferences:

  • Grows well in most well-drained soils

  • Prefers moist, fertile ground but adapts to poorer soils

  • Tolerates light clay, loam, or sandy soils

  • pH adaptable (acidic to neutral)

• Watering:

  • Water well during the first year

  • Once established, it is drought-tolerant and copes well in dry spells

  • Mulch annually to retain moisture and suppress weeds

• Feeding:

  • Feed lightly in early spring with a balanced shrub fertiliser

  • Overfeeding is unnecessary and may reduce foliage colour intensity

Pruning and Seasonal Care

Physocarpus 'Tiny Wine' is easy to maintain and responds well to pruning if needed.

• Pruning:

  • Prune lightly after flowering to maintain compact shape

  • Every 2–3 years, remove 1–3 older stems at the base to encourage fresh growth

  • Hard pruning in early spring will reduce flowering but rejuvenates older plants

• Winter Care:

  • No special protection needed—fully hardy across UK and Ireland (RHS H5–H6)

  • Attractive exfoliating bark adds visual interest in the dormant season

• Pests and Diseases:

  • Generally pest-free

  • May occasionally suffer from powdery mildew in dry or overcrowded sites—improve airflow and mulch to retain soil moisture

Design Uses and Combinations

Physocarpus 'Tiny Wine' is excellent for creating structure, colour contrast, and visual depth in garden designs.

• Best Uses:

  • Mixed borders, especially as a backdrop to lighter-coloured plants

  • Low hedging or foundation planting

  • Ideal for small gardens, courtyards, or urban front gardens

  • Specimen plant in a decorative pot (at least 40 cm diameter)

• Companion Plants:

  • Contrasts beautifully with light green, silver, or chartreuse foliage such as:

    • Hosta, Heuchera ‘Lime Marmalade’, Hakonechloa ‘Aureola’

  • Pairs well with other flowering shrubs like Spiraea, Weigela, or Lavatera

  • Looks great with grasses, perennials, and roses

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
