    Description

Planting Picea abies 'Will's Zwerg' 60–70 cm

    • About the plant

      • Dwarf, very slow-growing Norway spruce with a dense, conical habit.

      • Evergreen, with short, stiff needles and a naturally tidy outline.

    • Choosing the right position

      • Prefers full sun for tight, compact growth, but tolerates light shade.

      • Ideal for rockeries, gravel gardens, mixed conifer borders and statement pots.

      • Choose a spot sheltered from harsh, drying winds.

    • Soil and compost

      • Likes moist but well-drained soil; avoid areas that stay waterlogged.

      • Fares best in slightly acidic to neutral conditions.

      • On heavy clay, improve drainage with coarse grit and organic matter.

      • For pots, use peat-free ericaceous or conifer compost with added grit or perlite.

    • Planting in the ground

      • Dig a hole about twice the width of the pot and similar depth.

      • Position the plant so the top of the rootball is level with surrounding soil.

      • Backfill, firm gently and water thoroughly.

      • Apply a light mulch of bark or compost around, but not touching, the stem.

    • Planting in containers

      • Choose a sturdy pot at least 30 cm wide with good drainage holes.

      • Add a layer of crocks or coarse gravel at the base.

      • Set the plant so the soil level sits just below the pot rim.

      • Fill around the rootball with compost, firm lightly and water well.

    Ongoing Care, Watering and Feeding

    • Watering

      • Keep soil or compost evenly moist during the first growing season.

      • Once established in the ground, water deeply only in extended dry spells.

      • Container plants dry out faster; check regularly and water when the top few centimetres are dry.

    • Feeding

      • In early spring, apply a light dressing of slow-release, balanced fertiliser around the root zone.

      • This dwarf conifer needs only modest feeding; avoid strong, frequent fertiliser use.

      • Container plants benefit from a diluted liquid feed every 4–6 weeks from late spring to midsummer.

    • Mulching and weed control

      • Maintain a shallow layer of organic mulch around the base, topping up each spring.

      • Mulch conserves moisture, suppresses weeds and protects fine surface roots.

    • Pruning and shaping

      • Little or no pruning is required; it naturally forms a neat cone.

      • Remove dead, damaged or badly misplaced shoots, cutting back to healthy wood.

      • Avoid shortening the central leader unless you deliberately want to reduce height growth.

Seasonal Care, Problems and Design Tips

    • Winter and cold

      • Fully hardy in normal garden conditions once established.

      • In containers, raise pots on feet to improve drainage and, in very cold spells, move to a more sheltered spot to protect roots.

    • Pests and problems

      • Generally trouble-free with good resistance to most pests and diseases.

      • Check occasionally for aphids or spruce spider mite; early infestations can often be washed off with water.

    • Long-term growth and garden use

      • Very slow, steady growth makes it ideal for small gardens, terraces and long-term containers.

      • Works well as a year-round focal point in a pot, underplanted with low ground covers or seasonal colour.

      • In beds and rockeries, combine with heathers, dwarf conifers and stones to emphasise its form and texture
