Planting Conditions and Ideal Location

• Light Requirements: Thrives in full sun to light partial shade. Full sun promotes dense, even growth and strong needle colour.

• Soil Preferences: Prefers moist, well-drained, fertile soil but will tolerate a range of conditions, including sandy or loamy soils. Avoid prolonged waterlogging.

• pH Range: Performs best in slightly acidic to neutral soils (pH 5.5–7.0).

• Moisture Needs: Appreciates steady moisture during the growing season, but roots should never sit in waterlogged conditions.

• Planting Time: Best planted in autumn or spring to allow roots to establish before extreme weather.

• Spacing: Allow at least 1.5–2 metres from other trees or structures to accommodate its mature spread and ensure good air circulation.

• Positioning Tips: Ideal for rock gardens, mixed conifer borders, and formal garden designs where its compact, slow-growing habit can be appreciated.

• Shelter Needs: Hardy and wind-resistant once established, but young plants benefit from protection against harsh, drying winter winds.

Routine Care, Feeding, and Seasonal Maintenance

• Watering:

• Feeding: Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support healthy needle growth and maintain vibrant colour.

• Pruning:

  • Minimal pruning is required. Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches in late winter or early spring.

  • Light shaping can be done in early summer if necessary, but avoid cutting into old wood.

• Mulching: Apply a layer of composted bark or leaf mould around the base in spring to conserve moisture, suppress weeds, and keep roots cool. Keep mulch clear of the trunk to avoid rot.

• Pest and Disease Resistance: Generally robust and low-maintenance; occasional aphids or spruce spider mites may appear but rarely cause serious harm.

• Winter Care: Fully hardy across the UK and Ireland. Container-grown plants may benefit from insulating pots during severe frost to protect roots.

• Needle Care: Avoid allowing soil to completely dry out, as drought stress can cause premature needle drop.

The in-Store delivery charge will vary compared with online, in-store delivery charge is done on a case by case basis.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
