Planting Picea glauca ‘Super Green’ 80–100 cm
-
About the plant
-
Compact, slow-growing spruce with a neat, conical habit.
-
Dense, bright to mid-green needles that give a strong architectural look year-round.
-
An 80–100 cm plant is already a good-sized feature, ideal for pots or small gardens.
-
-
Choosing the right position
-
Prefers full sun for the tightest, most compact growth.
-
Tolerates light partial shade, especially in hotter, drier locations.
-
Choose a spot sheltered from strong, drying winds to prevent browning of needles.
-
-
Soil and compost
-
Likes moist but well-drained soil; avoid any site that becomes waterlogged.
-
Performs best in slightly acidic to neutral conditions; very chalky soil may cause yellowing.
-
On heavy clay, work in coarse grit and plenty of organic matter to improve structure and drainage.
-
For pots, use a peat-free ericaceous or conifer compost mixed with 20–30% grit or perlite.
-
-
Planting in the ground
-
Dig a hole about twice the width of the rootball and similar depth.
-
Loosen the soil at the base and sides to help new roots spread.
-
Place the plant so the top of the rootball is level with the surrounding soil.
-
Backfill with the improved soil, firm gently with your hands or foot, and water thoroughly.
-
Apply a light mulch of bark or compost around (but not touching) the stem to conserve moisture.
-
-
Planting in containers
-
Select a sturdy pot at least 35–40 cm wide, with ample drainage holes.
-
Add a layer of crocks or coarse gravel to the base for stability and drainage.
-
Position the plant so the compost level sits just below the rim of the pot.
-
Fill around the rootball with compost, firm lightly and water until it drains from the base.
-
Raise the container on pot feet to prevent water sitting around the base.
-
Ongoing Care, Watering and Feeding
-
Watering
-
Keep soil or compost evenly moist during the first growing season while roots establish.
-
Once established in the ground, water deeply only during prolonged dry spells.
-
Container plants dry out faster; check regularly and water when the top few centimetres of compost feel dry.
-
Avoid letting containers sit in saucers of water, as this can cause root rot.
-
-
Feeding
-
In early spring, apply a light dressing of slow-release, balanced fertiliser around the root zone.
-
A single annual feed is usually sufficient for plants in the ground.
-
Container-grown specimens may benefit from a diluted liquid feed every 4–6 weeks from late spring to midsummer.
-
Avoid heavy feeding, as this is a naturally steady-growing conifer that does not need strong fertiliser.
-
-
Mulching and weed control
-
Maintain a 5 cm layer of organic mulch around the base to conserve moisture and suppress weeds.
-
Keep mulch a few centimetres away from the trunk to reduce the risk of rot.
-
Hand-weed gently around the shallow roots rather than using tools that might damage them.
-
-
Pruning and shaping
-
Requires very little pruning; naturally forms a neat conical shape.
-
Remove any dead, damaged or badly placed branches in late winter or early spring.
-
Avoid cutting the central leader (top shoot) unless you deliberately want to limit height.
-
Seasonal Care, Problems and Design Tips
-
Winter care
-
Fully hardy in normal garden conditions once established.
-
For container plants, protect roots in severe cold by moving pots to a slightly sheltered spot or wrapping the container with insulating material.
-
Brush off heavy snow so branches are not bent or broken.
-
-
Pests and problems
-
Generally trouble-free, but check occasionally for aphids or spider mites on needles and stems.
-
Browning tips can result from drought, wind scorch or poor drainage; review watering and site conditions if this occurs.
-
Remove any dead or discoloured branches promptly, cutting back to healthy wood.
-
-
Long-term growth and garden use
-
Growth is steady but not fast, making it well suited to small gardens and long-term container displays.
-
Use as a focal point in a pot near an entrance, on a terrace, or within a mixed conifer and heather border.
-
Combine with gravel, boulders and low groundcovers to emphasise its strong form and year-round colour.
-
In winter, highlight its structure with subtle lighting or seasonal underplanting to create a striking feature in the darker months
