Introduction to Prunus laurocerasus 'Rotundifolia' (Cherry Laurel)

Prunus laurocerasus 'Rotundifolia', commonly known as Cherry Laurel, is a versatile and evergreen shrub prized for its glossy foliage, dense growth habit, and ornamental value. Belonging to the Prunus genus, 'Rotundifolia' is valued for its resilience, adaptability, and low-maintenance nature, making it a popular choice for hedges, screens, and foundation plantings in garden landscapes. With its lush foliage, fragrant flowers, and tolerance to various growing conditions, 'Rotundifolia' Cherry Laurel is an excellent choice for adding structure and beauty to outdoor spaces.

Planting and Establishment

  • Location: Plant Cherry Laurel in a location with full sun to partial shade. While it can tolerate some shade, it thrives in full sunlight, which promotes optimal growth and flowering.
  • Soil Type: Prefers well-drained soil with a neutral to slightly acidic pH. Amend heavy clay soil with organic matter such as compost to improve drainage.
  • Planting Time: Plant in spring or early autumn, avoiding periods of extreme heat or cold. Ensure the soil is warm and workable before planting.
  • Spacing: Space plants approximately 4-6 feet apart to allow for ample spreading and growth.
  • Planting Depth: Set the plants at the same depth as they were in their nursery containers, ensuring the root ball is level with the soil surface.
  • Watering: Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil. Once established, Cherry Laurel is drought-tolerant and requires minimal supplemental watering.

Maintenance and Care

  • Pruning: Trim back the stems of Cherry Laurel regularly to maintain a dense and compact growth habit. Prune lightly after the main flowering period to promote new growth and shape the plant as desired.
  • Fertilization: Apply a balanced fertilizer or compost in spring to promote healthy growth and foliage development. Avoid excessive fertilization, as it may lead to lush growth at the expense of density.
  • Mulching: Apply a layer of organic mulch around the base of the plants to conserve moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature.
  • Protection from Pests and Diseases: Monitor for common pests such as aphids or scale insects, and treat infestations promptly with appropriate control measures. Ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal diseases such as leaf spot or powdery mildew.

Landscape Uses and Design Tips

  • Hedge Planting: Plant Cherry Laurel in rows to create a dense and formal hedge, providing privacy, windbreak, and visual interest throughout the year.
  • Screening: Use as a tall and dense screen or windbreak along property boundaries or unsightly views, where its evergreen foliage can provide year-round coverage and beauty.
  • Foundation Plantings: Plant Cherry Laurel around the foundation of buildings or structures to soften harsh lines and create a green backdrop for other garden plants.
  • Specimen Planting: Use as a standalone specimen plant in garden beds or borders, where its glossy foliage and elegant form can be showcased.

Prunus laurocerasus 'Rotundifolia' Cherry Laurel is a versatile and attractive evergreen shrub that adds structure, beauty, and functionality to garden landscapes. With its lush foliage, dense growth habit, and low-maintenance nature, it's an excellent choice for gardeners seeking to create privacy, definition, and greenery in outdoor spaces
