    Planting and Growing Conditions

    Ideal Soil and Location

    • Soil Type: Prefers well-draining, sandy or loamy soil. Tolerates poor soils but performs best in slightly acidic to neutral pH.
    • Sun Exposure: Thrives in full sun. Requires at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for optimal growth and flowering.
    • Planting Location: Suitable for garden beds, borders, and containers. Ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal diseases.

    Watering and Feeding

    • Watering: Water moderately. Allow the soil to dry out between waterings to prevent root rot. Drought-tolerant once established.
    • Feeding: Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer at planting time. Supplement with a liquid fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season for optimal blooms.

    Temperature and Humidity

    • Temperature: Prefers warm temperatures between 20-30°C (68-86°F). Sensitive to frost; protect from cold temperatures and sudden frosts.
    • Humidity: Tolerates low to moderate humidity. High humidity can lead to fungal diseases; ensure good air circulation.

    Maintenance and Care

    Pruning and Deadheading

    • Pruning: Minimal pruning required. Trim back any leggy or damaged growth to maintain a neat appearance.
    • Deadheading: Regularly remove spent flowers to encourage continuous blooming and maintain the plant's appearance.

    Pests and Diseases

    • Common Pests: Generally pest-resistant but can occasionally be affected by aphids and spider mites. Use insecticidal soap or neem oil to manage infestations.
    • Diseases: Susceptible to root rot in poorly draining soil. Ensure proper watering practices and good air circulation to minimize disease risk.

    Winter Care

    • In-ground Plants: In USDA zones 9-11, protect from cold snaps with mulch or frost cloth. In cooler climates, treat as an annual or bring indoors.
    • Potted Plants: Move containers indoors or to a sheltered location before the first frost. Reduce watering during the dormant period.

    Propagation

    • Seeds: The most reliable method of propagation. Sow seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost or directly in the garden after the danger of frost has passed. Keep the soil moist until germination.
    • Cuttings: Can be propagated from softwood cuttings taken in late spring or early summer. Root in a well-draining potting mix.

    Companion Planting and Landscaping Uses

    Companion Plants

    • Ideal Companions: Pairs well with other drought-tolerant plants such as ornamental grasses, succulents, and annuals like marigolds and zinnias. The pink flowers contrast beautifully with green and silver foliage.
    • Arrangement: Use in mixed borders, containers, or as a standalone feature. Creates a striking display when planted en masse or along pathways.

    Landscape Uses

    • Borders and Edging: Ideal for creating colorful borders and edging along pathways and garden beds.
    • Containers: Suitable for container gardening on patios, balconies, and decks. Mix with other drought-tolerant plants for a cohesive display.

    Tips for Success

    • Pruning and Deadheading: Keep the plant tidy and encourage continuous blooming by regular deadheading and occasional pruning.
    • Monitor for Pests: Inspect regularly for signs of pests and treat promptly to prevent infestations.
