1. Growing Conditions:

• Sunlight: Plant rhubarb in a location with full sun to partial shade. It prefers at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day for optimal growth and production.
• Soil: Choose well-draining, fertile soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. Rhubarb prefers loamy or sandy soil enriched with organic matter.
• Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during the plant's establishment period and throughout the growing season. Ensure adequate irrigation to support vigorous growth.
• Temperature: Rhubarb is hardy in USDA zones 3-8. It prefers cool to moderate temperatures and may require protection from extreme heat or cold.

2. Planting and Spacing:

• Planting Time: Plant rhubarb crowns in spring or autumn when the soil is cool and moist. Space individual plants about 3 to 4 feet apart to allow for their spread.
• Soil Preparation: Prepare the planting area by incorporating compost or well-rotted manure to improve soil fertility and structure. Ensure good drainage to prevent waterlogging.
• Depth: Plant rhubarb crowns with the bud eyes just below the soil surface, leaving the crown slightly exposed. Avoid planting too deeply, as this can lead to rotting.

3. Care and Maintenance:

• Mulching: Apply a layer of organic mulch, such as straw or compost, around the base of the plants to conserve moisture, suppress weed growth, and maintain a cool soil temperature.
• Watering: Water rhubarb regularly, especially during hot, dry weather and periods of rapid growth. Avoid overwatering, as this can lead to root rot. Water at the base of the plants to keep the foliage dry and prevent fungal diseases.
• Fertilizing: Apply a balanced fertilizer in spring to promote healthy growth and foliage. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for application rates and frequency.
• Pruning: Remove flower stalks as soon as they appear to redirect the plant's energy into leaf and stalk production. Trim back any dead or damaged foliage as needed throughout the growing season.
• Division: Divide mature rhubarb crowns every 5-10 years to rejuvenate the plant and maintain vigor. Divide the crowns in early spring or autumn, and replant the divisions in suitable locations.

4. Harvesting:

• Harvest rhubarb stalks when they reach 10-15 inches in length and are firm and crisp. Grasp the stalk near the base and pull it gently to remove it from the crown. Avoid cutting the stalks, as this can introduce disease.
• Harvest only a few stalks from each plant at a time to allow the plant to continue producing throughout the season. Stop harvesting in late summer to allow the plant to store energy for the winter.

5. Pest and Disease Management:

• Rhubarb is relatively resistant to pests and diseases. However, watch out for issues such as aphids, slugs, and powdery mildew.

The in-Store delivery charge will vary compared with online, in-store delivery charge is done on a case by case basis.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
