Rhyncospermum jasminoides – The Fragrant Star Jasmine
The Rhyncospermum jasminoides, often known as Star Jasmine, is a stunning evergreen climber loved for its glossy foliage and masses of highly fragrant flowers. In summer, it produces a profusion of star-shaped white blooms that release a sweet jasmine-like perfume, filling gardens with scent. The evergreen leaves provide year-round interest, turning bronze-red in winter for added seasonal colour.
This versatile climber is ideal for covering walls, fences, pergolas, or trellises, and its compact growth makes it suitable even for smaller gardens. With its elegant appearance, long flowering season, and delightful fragrance, Star Jasmine is one of the best choices for creating a romantic and stylish garden atmosphere.
General Information
Rhyncospermum jasminoides is a hardy, evergreen climber originally from East Asia and widely grown in Europe for its ornamental and fragrant qualities.
-
Habit: Twining, evergreen climber with dense foliage.
-
Height & spread: Can grow 6–9m tall and 3–5m wide, but can be kept smaller with pruning.
-
Foliage: Glossy, leathery, dark green leaves that turn bronze or red in colder months.
-
Flowers: Masses of small, star-shaped white flowers with a powerful, sweet fragrance.
-
Flowering season: Early to late summer (June–August), often with a lighter second flush in autumn.
-
Position: Prefers full sun for best flowering, though tolerates partial shade.
-
Soil: Fertile, well-drained soil; grows well in loam, sandy, or clay soils if not waterlogged.
-
Hardiness: Hardy in most UK and Irish gardens, though protection may be needed in very cold or exposed sites.
-
Uses: Ideal for walls, trellises, pergolas, fences, large containers, or as ground cover.
Its combination of fragrance, evergreen foliage, and seasonal flower display makes it one of the most desirable climbers for decorative and practical use.
Care Guide
Rhyncospermum jasminoides is easy to grow once established, needing only moderate care to thrive and flower abundantly.
Planting
-
When to plant: Best in spring or early autumn when the soil is warm and moist.
-
Depth & spacing: Plant at the same depth as in the pot, 60–90cm apart for wall or fence coverage.
-
Support: Provide a trellis, wires, or pergola for climbing, as it attaches by twining stems.
Watering & Feeding
-
Water well during the first year to establish roots.
-
Once established, it is drought-tolerant but flowers more heavily with regular watering in summer.
-
Feed in spring with a balanced fertiliser; for container plants, apply a liquid feed monthly through the growing season.
Pruning & Maintenance
-
Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape and encourage bushy growth.
-
Tie in young shoots to supports until established.
-
Remove dead, damaged, or congested stems in early spring.
-
Mulch around the base annually with compost to conserve moisture and enrich soil.
Protection
-
Hardy in most sheltered gardens but may need winter protection in colder regions (e.g., fleece in severe frosts).
-
Container-grown plants should be moved to a sheltered spot in winter.
-
Generally pest- and disease-free.
