Salvia 'Amistad' – Planting & Care Guide

    About Salvia 'Amistad'

Salvia 'Amistad' is one of the finest ornamental salvias, loved for its exceptionally long flowering season and striking deep violet-purple flowers held in almost black calyces. Blooming continuously from late spring until the first frosts, it brings bold colour, movement and elegance to borders and containers for months on end.

Growing to approximately 1–1.5 metres tall with a spread of 60–90cm, this vigorous, bushy perennial creates an impressive display of rich green foliage and upright flower spikes. The nectar-rich blooms are highly attractive to bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects, making it an excellent choice for wildlife-friendly gardens. In Ireland, it often survives mild winters in well-drained, sheltered gardens but benefits from winter protection during colder spells.

    Planting Guide

    • Plant in full sun for the best flowering performance.
    • Will tolerate light partial shade, although flowering is most prolific in full sun.
    • Choose a warm, sheltered position protected from strong winds.
    • Prefers fertile, well-drained, moisture-retentive soil.
    • Improve the soil with compost or well-rotted organic matter before planting.
    • Dig a planting hole twice the width of the root ball and the same depth.
    • Carefully remove the plant from its pot and gently loosen the roots.
    • Position the crown level with the surrounding soil surface.
    • Backfill with soil, firm gently and water thoroughly.
    • Apply a layer of mulch around the base, keeping it away from the stems.
    • Space plants approximately 60–75cm apart to allow room for healthy growth.

    Care & Maintenance

Salvia 'Amistad' is easy to grow and rewards gardeners with months of spectacular flowers.

    • Water regularly during the first growing season.
    • Once established, water during prolonged dry spells.
    • Keep the soil evenly moist but avoid waterlogging.
    • Feed in spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser.
    • Apply a high-potash liquid feed every few weeks during the flowering season to encourage continuous blooms.
    • Refresh mulch annually to retain moisture and improve soil quality.
    • Remove weeds regularly around the base.
    • Deadhead spent flower spikes to encourage fresh blooms throughout the season.
    • Protect the crown with mulch during winter in colder areas.

    Pruning

Regular pruning encourages vigorous growth and extended flowering.

    • Remove faded flower spikes regularly throughout summer.
    • Cut back the plant by about one-third in midsummer if it becomes leggy to encourage fresh growth and more flowers.
    • Leave the top growth in place over winter to help protect the crown.
    • Cut stems back to approximately 10–15cm above ground level in early spring once new growth begins.
    • Remove any dead or frost-damaged stems during spring.
