Salvia guaranitica 'Carine's Amazing Blue' is a show-stopping perennial sage known for its intensely blue, tubular flowers and deep green foliage. A member of the Lamiaceae family, this variety originates from South America and thrives in warm, sunny conditions. It is a cultivar of the Salvia guaranitica species, often called "Anise-scented sage" due to the lightly fragrant, slightly minty scent of its leaves when crushed.

This variety is especially attractive to pollinators—particularly bees and hummingbirds—and is an excellent choice for wildlife-friendly and ornamental planting schemes. Mature plants can reach 90 to 120 cm in height, with a bushy, upright habit that works well in borders, containers, and cottage gardens.

Sunlight, Temperature & Positioning

• Sunlight Requirements:

  • Requires full sun to thrive and flower profusely.

  • Tolerates light shade, though flowering may be reduced.

• Temperature & Hardiness:

  • Hardy to approximately -5°C with mulching; ideal for USDA Zones 8–10.

  • In colder climates, treat as an annual or overwinter indoors.

• Ideal Position:

  • Plant in a sheltered, sunny spot with good air circulation.

  • Suitable for mixed borders, pollinator gardens, and large containers.

Soil, Watering & Feeding

• Soil Needs:

  • Prefers light, fertile, well-drained soil.

  • Avoid heavy, waterlogged ground which may cause root rot.

• Watering Requirements:

  • Water regularly during the growing season, especially in hot, dry spells.

  • Reduce watering as the plant becomes established; moderately drought-tolerant.

• Feeding:

  • Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring.

  • A monthly liquid feed during flowering can boost performance in poor soils or containers.

Pruning, Flowering & General Maintenance

• Pruning Guide:

  • Prune lightly in mid-season to maintain shape and encourage bushiness.

  • Cut back hard in early spring once new growth appears from the base.

• Blooming Period:

  • Flowers from midsummer through to autumn, often until the first frost.

  • Deadheading is not essential but can tidy appearance and support continuous bloom.

• Support & Spacing:

  • Provide support in windy areas due to tall flower spikes.

  • Space plants 40–60 cm apart for airflow and shape.

Propagation, Pests & Companion Tips

• Propagation:

  • Propagate by softwood or semi-ripe cuttings in late spring to summer.

  • Can also be divided in early spring where clumps are large.

• Pests & Diseases:

  • Generally pest-free, but occasionally susceptible to aphids and slugs.

  • Good drainage and airflow prevent most fungal issues.

• Garden Companions:

  • Pairs beautifully with rudbeckia, echinacea, verbena bonariensis, and ornamental grasses.

  • Plant en masse for maximum colour and pollinator attraction.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
