    Description

Overview of Salvia nemorosa 'Blue Bouquetta'

Salvia nemorosa 'Blue Bouquetta' is a dwarf, compact perennial salvia developed for vibrant colour in small spaces. Part of the Salvia nemorosa group, it is known for its intensely violet-blue flower spikes, held above compact mounds of textured green foliage. A newer cultivar, 'Blue Bouquetta' is bred for early, long-lasting blooming and a more controlled habit, making it particularly well-suited for containers, low borders, and front-of-bed planting.

Reaching just 20–25 cm in height and 25–30 cm in spread, this tidy, upright selection offers continuous flowering from late spring through summer, especially with regular deadheading. Like other salvias, it is a magnet for bees, butterflies, and pollinators, and is exceptionally easy to grow with minimal maintenance.

    Sunlight, Temperature & Positioning

    • Light Requirements:

      • Requires full sun (at least 6 hours daily) for best flowering and compact form.

      • Tolerates very light shade, but bloom quantity may be reduced.

    • Hardiness:

      • Fully hardy in USDA Zones 4–9 and RHS H7.

      • Withstands winter frosts and temperatures down to approximately -20°C.

    • Best Garden Uses:

      • Perfect for edging, rock gardens, small garden beds, and patio pots.

      • Especially effective in formal layouts, low herbaceous borders, or mixed perennial displays.

      • Great choice for wildlife and pollinator-friendly gardens.

    Soil, Watering & Feeding

    • Soil Preferences:

      • Thrives in well-drained, moderately fertile soil.

      • Performs well in sandy, loamy, or slightly gritty conditions.

      • Avoid poorly drained or heavy clay soils—amend with organic matter or grit to improve structure.

    • Watering Needs:

      • Water consistently during establishment (first 6–8 weeks).

      • Once mature, it is moderately drought-tolerant.

      • Avoid waterlogging—allow soil surface to dry between waterings.

    • Feeding Schedule:

      • Apply a balanced granular fertiliser in early spring.

      • Optional: feed monthly with a diluted liquid fertiliser during flowering to prolong blooms.

      • Do not overfeed; too much nitrogen may reduce flower production.

    Flowering, Pruning & Maintenance

    • Bloom Period:

      • Begins flowering in late spring and continues into late summer or early autumn with proper care.

      • Produces numerous tight, upright spikes of vivid blue-purple blooms.

    • Deadheading & Pruning:

      • Regularly deadhead spent flower spikes to extend the blooming season and encourage rebloom.

      • After the main flush, shear back stems by one-third to rejuvenate the plant.

      • In early spring, cut back all old stems just above new emerging shoots at the crown.

    • Mulching & Seasonal Care:

      • Mulch lightly in spring to suppress weeds and retain moisture.

      • In heavy rainfall or cold regions, ensure soil is free-draining over winter to prevent crown rot.

    Propagation, Pests & Garden Combinations

    • Propagation Techniques:

      • Propagate by division in early spring or autumn every 3–4 years to rejuvenate clumps.

      • Can also be propagated from basal cuttings in spring.

      • Seed propagation not recommended for named cultivars due to genetic variability.

    • Pest & Disease Resistance:

      • Naturally resistant to deer and rabbits.

      • Rarely troubled by pests—may occasionally encounter aphids or mildew in humid conditions.

      • Avoid overcrowding and maintain airflow to prevent fungal issues.

    • Companion Planting:

      • Excellent when paired with coreopsis, achillea, gaura, heuchera, and catmint (nepeta).

      • Contrasts beautifully with silver-leaved plants such as artemisia and stachys.

      • Ideal for mass planting or repeating in rows for structured design.

    Container Growing & Display Tips

    • Container Suitability:

      • Perfectly suited for small- to medium-sized containers.

      • Use a peat-free, loam-based compost with added perlite or grit for drainage.

      • Water deeply and allow excess to drain—avoid standing water at roots.

    • Design Impact:

      • Creates compact colour blocks in low-growing displays.

      • Particularly effective in modern and minimalist garden designs due to its tidy habit.

      • Combines well with ornamental grasses and other sun-loving, drought-tolerant perennials.
