Salvia nemorosa 'Amethyst' is a clump-forming herbaceous perennial that stands out for its vibrant amethyst-pink flower spikes, offering a softer alternative to the typical blue and purple varieties of Salvia nemorosa. It is part of the mint family (Lamiaceae) and is valued for its long flowering period, compact habit, and strong vertical form that adds texture and structure to sunny garden beds.

Mature plants typically reach a height of 45–60 cm and a spread of about 30–45 cm, making this cultivar ideal for front-of-border placements, container gardens, and formal or informal mixed plantings. Like other salvias, ‘Amethyst’ is aromatic, deer-resistant, and highly attractive to pollinators.

Growing Conditions and Maintenance

Salvia nemorosa 'Amethyst' is reliable, tough, and versatile. It thrives in full sun and poor to average soils, making it suitable for both novice and experienced gardeners. Regular deadheading will keep it flowering generously throughout the season.

• Light Requirements:

  • Requires full sun (6+ hours daily) for best flowering and compact growth

  • Tolerates very light shade but may become leggy with fewer blooms

• Soil Conditions:

  • Prefers well-drained, moderately fertile soil

  • Tolerates sandy, stony, or alkaline soils

  • Avoid poorly drained or compacted soils, especially in winter

• Watering Needs:

  • Water regularly after planting to help establish roots

  • Once mature, it is drought-tolerant and thrives with minimal watering

  • Allow soil to dry between waterings to prevent root rot

• Feeding and Fertilising:

  • Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring if soil is low in nutrients

  • In containers, supplement with a liquid feed every 4–6 weeks during the growing season

• Deadheading and Pruning:

  • Deadhead spent flowers to prolong bloom and encourage rebloom

  • After the first main flush (early to mid-summer), shear back by one-third to stimulate a second round of blooms

  • In early spring, cut back all stems to just above new basal growth

• Dividing:

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
