Overview of Salvia roemeriana 'Hot Trumpets'
Salvia roemeriana 'Hot Trumpets' is a compact, ornamental sage native to the rocky woodlands of Texas and northern Mexico. This unique perennial is prized for its brilliant scarlet-red, trumpet-shaped flowers, which bloom in profusion above rich green, rounded foliage. Unlike many other salvias, this variety thrives in partial shade, making it ideal for woodland gardens, shaded borders, and containers.
It grows to about 30–45 cm in height and width, making it an excellent choice for smaller spaces, underplanting, or as a front-of-border accent. ‘Hot Trumpets’ is especially attractive to hummingbirds and bees, and blooms reliably from late spring through early autumn, often with a second flush in favourable conditions.
Sunlight, Temperature & Positioning
-
Light Requirements:
-
Thrives in partial shade to dappled sunlight.
-
Can tolerate full sun in cooler climates if soil remains moist.
-
Ideal for north- or east-facing borders, woodland edges, or beneath light tree canopies.
-
-
Temperature & Hardiness:
-
Hardy to approximately -5°C (RHS H4); best suited for USDA Zones 7–10.
-
May be short-lived in colder regions unless provided with winter protection.
-
Performs as a perennial in milder areas and as a tender perennial or annual in colder zones.
-
-
Placement Tips:
-
Works well in woodland gardens, rock gardens, and shaded containers.
-
Combine with shade-tolerant plants such as heuchera, epimedium, and ferns.
-
Soil, Watering & Feeding
-
Soil Preferences:
-
Prefers well-drained, slightly alkaline to neutral soils.
-
Tolerant of poorer soils as long as drainage is good.
-
Avoid heavy clay or boggy ground—add grit or compost to improve structure.
-
-
Watering Routine:
-
Water regularly during the growing season, especially in dry or sunny locations.
-
Allow the top layer of soil to dry slightly between watering.
-
Avoid overwatering, particularly in cooler, shaded environments.
-
-
Fertilisation Needs:
-
Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring.
-
Supplemental feeding not usually required in rich soils.
-
Avoid overfeeding, which can result in leggy growth with fewer flowers.
-
Flowering, Pruning & Maintenance
-
Blooming Time:
-
Produces vivid red trumpet flowers from late spring to early autumn.
-
May bloom intermittently or with a second flush if deadheaded regularly.
-
Flowers are held above the foliage in showy clusters that are highly attractive to hummingbirds.
-
-
Pruning Guidelines:
-
Lightly trim after the first flowering to encourage bushiness and rebloom.
-
Cut back in early spring to remove any winter damage and reshape the plant.
-
Do not prune in late autumn—allow foliage to protect crown over winter.
-
-
Seasonal Maintenance:
-
Apply mulch around the base in autumn to protect roots in cooler regions.
-
In containers, move to a sheltered location or provide fleece during hard frosts.
-
Remove faded leaves and flowers regularly to maintain appearance.
-
Propagation, Pests & Companion Planting
-
Propagation Methods:
-
Best propagated from softwood cuttings in late spring or early summer.
-
Can also be grown from seed, although seed-grown plants may vary slightly.
-
Division is less common due to its compact and fibrous root system.
-
-
Pest & Disease Resistance:
-
Generally pest-free and low maintenance.
-
May occasionally suffer from aphids or fungal leaf spot in poorly ventilated areas.
-
Ensure good airflow and avoid overhead watering to prevent disease.
-
-
Companion Planting:
-
Pair with shade-loving perennials like pulmonaria, brunnera, or tiarella.
-
Adds a pop of colour to woodland borders, raised beds, and informal shade plantings.
-
An excellent choice for pollinator gardens with limited sun.
-
Container & Display Tips
-
Container Cultivation:
-
Perfect for patio pots in semi-shade.
-
Use a loam-based compost with added grit for drainage.
-
Water consistently and elevate pots slightly off the ground to improve air flow.
-
-
Design Suggestions:
-
Use in small drifts or clusters for maximum impact.
-
Plant near paths or patios where its vivid flowers can be appreciated up close.
-
Combines well with silver or dark-leaved foliage for contrast
