Planting Scilla siberica ‘Alba’ Bulbs
A fifteen-pack of Scilla siberica ‘Alba’ bulbs provides a graceful display of nodding white flowers in early spring. Commonly known as white Siberian squill, this compact bulb is ideal for naturalising beneath deciduous trees, through lawns, along border edges and in rock gardens or containers. Its flowers appear early in the season and provide nectar for emerging pollinating insects.
-
Plant the bulbs during autumn, ideally between September and November, before the soil becomes frozen or waterlogged.
-
Choose a position in full sun or partial shade. A place beneath deciduous trees is particularly suitable because the bulbs receive plenty of light before the overhead leaves develop.
-
Select fertile, humus-rich, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. Scilla adapts to clay, loam, chalk and sandy ground if excess winter water can drain away.
-
Improve poor soil with well-rotted compost or leaf mould. Add horticultural grit where drainage is slow.
-
Dig individual holes or prepare one larger planting area approximately 8–10 cm deep.
-
Position each bulb with its pointed end facing upwards and the flatter root plate at the bottom.
-
Space the bulbs approximately 5–8 cm apart. Arrange them in informal groups rather than straight rows for a natural appearance.
-
Plant all fifteen bulbs together for immediate impact or divide them into several smaller drifts.
-
Backfill carefully, firm the soil gently and water once to settle it around the bulbs.
-
For containers, use peat-free multipurpose compost mixed with grit and select a frost-resistant pot with clear drainage holes.
Watering, Feeding and Flowering Care
Scilla siberica ‘Alba’ needs little attention after planting. The bulbs benefit from moisture during active growth but should not remain in saturated soil while dormant.
-
Water after planting if the ground is dry. Autumn and winter rainfall will normally provide enough moisture for bulbs planted outdoors.
-
Check containers regularly, particularly when they are positioned beneath roof overhangs or against walls where rainfall may not reach the compost.
-
Keep container compost lightly moist without making it continually wet. Empty saucers and decorative outer pots promptly after watering.
-
Water during spring if conditions are unusually dry, especially while leaves and flowers are developing.
-
Apply a balanced bulb fertiliser as the shoots emerge if the soil is poor or the bulbs are growing in containers.
-
A high-potassium feed after flowering can support bulb development and encourage a strong display the following spring.
-
Avoid excessive nitrogen, which may produce abundant foliage with fewer flowers.
-
Stop feeding when the leaves begin to turn yellow naturally.
-
Protect emerging shoots from slugs and snails, particularly during mild, damp spring weather.
-
Avoid walking over naturalised bulbs while they are actively growing because crushed foliage cannot effectively replenish the bulbs.
-
Mark bulbs growing through grass so their leaves are not accidentally cut during early lawn maintenance.
Aftercare and Naturalising
White Siberian squill is well suited to naturalising. When planted in favourable conditions, the bulbs gradually multiply through offsets and may spread by seed, creating increasingly generous drifts.
-
Leave faded flowers in place if naturalisation is desired. Developing seeds may produce plants in nearby areas.
-
Remove spent flower heads if seedlings are not wanted or the display must remain within a defined space.
-
Allow the foliage to remain until it turns completely yellow and separates easily from the bulb.
-
Do not cut, tie or fold green leaves. They must continue photosynthesising to store energy for the following year.
-
Delay mowing naturalised lawn areas for at least six weeks after flowering or until all foliage has died back.
-
Reduce watering as the leaves disappear and the bulbs enter summer dormancy.
-
Leave established bulbs undisturbed where the soil remains well drained. Regular lifting is unnecessary and can interrupt natural colony development.
-
Divide overcrowded clumps after the foliage has died back. Replant healthy bulbs immediately at their original depth.
-
Move dormant bulbs carefully because their small size can make them difficult to locate once the leaves have disappeared.
-
Repot container displays every two or three years if flowering declines or the bulbs become crowded.
-
Remove soft, damaged or mouldy bulbs whenever clumps are lifted or container compost is refreshed.
-
Wear gloves if you have sensitive skin. Scilla bulbs and other plant parts are harmful if eaten, so keep them away from children and pets.
-
With autumn planting, spring moisture, good drainage and undisturbed foliage, fifteen Scilla siberica ‘Alba’ bulbs can develop into a dependable and beautiful early-season display.
