Fargesia 'Red Dragon' – Planting & Care Guide

About Fargesia 'Red Dragon'

Fargesia 'Red Dragon' is a stunning, non-invasive, clump-forming evergreen bamboo, prized for its elegant arching habit and colourful canes. New canes emerge with attractive reddish-purple tones that mature to rich burgundy and deep green, creating year-round interest. Combined with its fine, lush green foliage, it brings movement, texture and a contemporary feel to any garden.

Unlike running bamboo varieties, Fargesia 'Red Dragon' does not spread aggressively, making it a safe choice for gardens of all sizes. Growing to approximately 2.5–4 metres tall with a spread of 1.5–2 metres, it is ideal for screening, hedging, specimen planting and large containers. Its graceful form also makes it an excellent feature in Japanese and contemporary gardens.

Planting Guide

  • Plant in full sun, partial shade or light shade.
  • Prefers a sheltered position protected from strong, drying winds.
  • Thrives in fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil.
  • Improve poor soils by adding compost or well-rotted organic matter before planting.
  • Dig a planting hole twice the width of the root ball and the same depth.
  • Carefully remove the plant from its pot and gently loosen the roots.
  • Position the root ball level with the surrounding soil.
  • Backfill with soil, firm gently and water thoroughly.
  • Apply a 5–8cm layer of organic mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
  • Space plants 1–1.5 metres apart for a dense screen or 2 metres apart for specimen planting.

Care & Maintenance

Fargesia 'Red Dragon' is easy to care for and provides year-round interest with minimal maintenance.

  • Water regularly during the first growing season.
  • Keep the soil consistently moist, particularly during warm, dry weather.
  • Once established, water during prolonged dry periods.
  • Feed in early spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser.
  • A nitrogen-rich fertiliser in spring encourages healthy foliage and vigorous new canes.
  • Refresh mulch annually to improve soil fertility and conserve moisture.
  • Remove weeds regularly from around the base.
  • Water container-grown plants more frequently during summer.
  • Avoid allowing the roots to dry out completely.

Pruning

Very little pruning is required to keep the plant healthy and attractive.

  • Remove any dead, damaged or weak canes in late winter or early spring.
  • Thin out older canes occasionally to improve airflow and encourage fresh growth.
  • Trim lightly to maintain the desired height or shape if grown as a hedge.
  • Remove yellowing leaves or damaged foliage as required.
  • Avoid cutting back all canes, as this reduces the plant's natural screening effect.

Sedum mix

Sedum Mix – Planting & Care Guide

About Sedum Mix

Sedum Mix, commonly known as Stonecrop, is a collection of hardy, easy-to-grow succulents grown for their colourful foliage and long-lasting flowers. Available in a wide range of varieties, Sedums offer foliage in shades of green, blue-grey, purple and bronze, with flowers in pink, red, yellow or white that bloom from summer into autumn.

Depending on the variety, Sedums may form low-growing mats or upright clumps, typically reaching 10–60cm in height with a spread of 30–60cm. Their fleshy leaves store water, making them exceptionally drought tolerant and ideal for low-maintenance gardens. The nectar-rich flowers are highly attractive to bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects, providing valuable late-season food sources.

Planting Guide

  • Plant in full sun for the best foliage colour and flowering.
  • Tolerates light partial shade, although growth may become less compact.
  • Prefers well-drained soil and thrives in poor to moderately fertile conditions.
  • Suitable for sandy, chalky and loamy soils.
  • Improve heavy clay soils by incorporating horticultural grit.
  • Dig a planting hole twice the width of the root ball and the same depth.
  • Carefully remove the plant from its container and gently loosen the roots.
  • Position the plant so the crown sits level with the surrounding soil.
  • Backfill with soil, firm gently and water thoroughly.
  • Apply a light gravel mulch around the base to improve drainage and suppress weeds.
  • Space plants approximately 30–50cm apart, depending on the variety.

Care & Maintenance

Sedums are among the easiest perennials to grow and require very little maintenance.

  • Water regularly during the first growing season.
  • Once established, water only during prolonged dry periods.
  • Avoid overwatering, especially during winter.
  • Feed lightly in spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser.
  • Avoid excessive feeding, as this can produce soft, weak growth.
  • Remove weeds regularly around the base.
  • Refresh gravel mulch if required to maintain good drainage.
  • Upright varieties may benefit from support in very rich soils.
  • Divide mature clumps every 3–5 years to maintain healthy growth.

Pruning

Minimal pruning is required.

  • Remove faded flower heads in late winter or early spring.
  • Leave seed heads over winter for additional interest and wildlife value.
  • Cut back old stems to ground level before new growth emerges in spring.
  • Remove any damaged or diseased growth as required.
  • Divide overcrowded clumps every few years to rejuvenate the plant.
