    Description

    Overview and Features

The Syringa 'Parfum de Nature'® Mix is a collection of compact, fragrant lilac varieties bred for exceptional scent, repeat flowering, and garden versatility. Unlike traditional tall lilacs (Syringa vulgaris), the ‘Parfum de Nature’® series is part of a new generation of dwarf to mid-sized hybrids, ideal for modern gardens and containers.

These cultivars offer a broad colour range—from soft lavenders to deep purples and creamy whites—all heavily perfumed and produced in dense, conical flower clusters. Many are re-bloomers, giving a second flush in late summer.

    • Height and spread: 1.2–1.8 m tall × 1–1.5 m wide

    • Foliage: Green, deciduous leaves with a clean appearance

    • Flowers: Classic lilac panicles in various hues, spring bloom with possible summer repeat

    • Fragrance: Rich, sweet perfume—ideal for sensory gardens

    • Growth habit: Upright, bushy, and compact

    • Perfect for: Small gardens, patio containers, hedging, and cutting

    Planting and Growing Conditions

These lilacs are adaptable but thrive best with full sun and good air circulation. Proper siting and care will ensure strong flowering and longevity.

    • Light Requirements:

      • Requires full sun (at least 6 hours daily) for maximum flowering

      • Avoid dense shade—it leads to poor blooms and mildew-prone foliage

    • Soil Preferences:

      • Prefers moist but well-drained soil

      • Tolerant of a wide pH range; slightly alkaline is ideal

      • Avoid waterlogged or compacted ground—improves drainage before planting if necessary

    • Planting Tips:

      • Plant in spring or autumn for best establishment

      • Space plants around 1 metre apart for a hedge or group

      • Mix in compost at planting time to boost soil structure and nutrients

    Care and Maintenance

Syringa 'Parfum de Nature'® is designed to be easy-care, with minimal pruning and good disease resistance compared to traditional varieties.

    • Watering:

      • Water regularly in the first year until established

      • Once established, they are drought-tolerant but benefit from watering in dry spells, especially before flowering

    • Feeding:

      • Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring

      • Avoid overfeeding with nitrogen—this can cause lush leaves at the expense of flowers

    • Pruning:

      • Lightly prune immediately after spring flowering to maintain shape and encourage re-blooming

      • Remove faded flowers and trim back spent wood

      • Avoid late-season pruning which may remove next year’s buds

    • Deadheading:

      • Optional but improves tidiness and encourages re-flowering in reblooming varieties

    Uses in the Garden

The compact size and heavy scent of Syringa 'Parfum de Nature'® varieties make them versatile and rewarding in a wide range of settings.

    • Best Uses:

      • Patio containers and terrace borders

      • Low flowering hedges or informal screens

      • Feature shrubs in cottage or sensory gardens

      • Ideal for cut flowers—blooms last well in vases

    • Companion Plants:

      • Looks great with roses, nepeta, geraniums, salvia, and heucheras

      • Plant alongside spring bulbs like tulips and narcissi for a layered display

    • Fragrance Tip:

      • Position near windows, paths, or seating areas to enjoy the perfume

      • Excellent for evening scent near patios or porches

    Extra Notes

    • Hardiness:

      • Fully hardy throughout the UK and Ireland (RHS H5)

      • Withstands frost and cold winters with ease

    • Pest and Disease Resistance:

      • More resistant to powdery mildew than older varieties

      • Occasionally affected by aphids—treat early if needed

    • Longevity:

      • Long-lived and develops more flowering power with age

      • Benefits from occasional mulching with well-rotted compost
