Description

Planting & Positioning

  • Thymus ‘Foxley’ is a compact, evergreen thyme variety with aromatic green leaves edged in creamy yellow and soft pink summer flowers.

  • Ideal for herb gardens, gravel beds, rockeries, raised beds, and container planting.

  • Best grown in full sun to maintain strong variegation and compact growth.

  • Will tolerate light partial shade, though colour may be less vibrant and growth slightly looser.

  • Prefers light, well-drained soil and does not tolerate prolonged wet conditions.

  • In heavy clay soils, improve drainage with grit or plant in raised beds.

  • Dig a hole slightly wider than the root ball and no deeper than the pot.

  • Position the plant so the top of the root ball sits level with the surrounding soil.

  • Backfill with free-draining soil, firm gently, and water lightly after planting.

  • Space plants to allow airflow and natural spreading.

‘Foxley’ forms a low, spreading mound and works particularly well at the front of borders or spilling gently over edges.

Watering, Feeding & General Care

  • Water regularly during the first growing season to help establish roots.

  • Allow the soil to dry out between watering.

  • Once established, this thyme is drought tolerant and requires minimal watering.

  • Avoid overwatering, especially during autumn and winter.

  • Container-grown plants need occasional watering in warm weather but must have excellent drainage.

  • Feed lightly in spring with a balanced fertiliser if required.

  • Avoid rich or overly fertile soil, as this can reduce flavour intensity and cause soft growth.

  • A light gravel mulch can help keep foliage dry and reduce weed growth.

The leaves are lightly aromatic and can be harvested for culinary use throughout the growing season.

Pruning, Maintenance & Seasonal Interest

  • Trim lightly after flowering to maintain a neat, compact shape and encourage fresh growth.

  • Avoid cutting back into old woody stems, as regrowth may be limited.

  • Remove any dead or damaged growth in spring.

  • In colder areas, ensure excellent drainage during winter to prevent root rot.

  • ‘Foxley’ produces small pink flowers in summer that are highly attractive to bees and other pollinators.

  • Replace older plants every few years if they become woody or sparse in the centre.

  • Generally low maintenance and pest resistant when grown in suitable conditions.

With full sun and free-draining soil, Thymus ‘Foxley’ provides colourful foliage, fragrant leaves, and pollinator-friendly flowers, making it a versatile addition to herb gardens and ornamental planting schemes
