Planting Triteleia laxa ‘Koningin Fabiola’ Bulbs

A twenty-pack of Triteleia laxa ‘Koningin Fabiola’ bulbs provides an elegant late-spring and early-summer display. Also known as triplet lily or Queen Fabiola, this bulbous perennial produces slender stems topped with clusters of star-shaped violet-blue flowers. It is suitable for sunny borders, gravel gardens, rockeries, containers and cut-flower planting.

  • Plant the bulbs during autumn in mild, well-drained locations. In colder or wetter gardens, plant during early spring after the most severe weather has passed.

  • Choose a warm, sheltered position in full sun. Abundant light encourages strong stems, rich flower colour and reliable bulb development.

  • Select fertile, light and sharply drained soil. Triteleia dislikes cold, saturated ground, particularly while dormant.

  • Improve heavy clay with organic matter and horticultural grit. Raised beds or containers may be more suitable where winter drainage is poor.

  • Dig individual holes or prepare one wider planting area approximately 8–10 cm deep.

  • Position each bulb with its pointed end facing upwards and the flatter root plate at the bottom.

  • Space the bulbs approximately 5–8 cm apart. Planting them in groups creates a stronger display than scattering individual bulbs widely.

  • Arrange all twenty bulbs in one generous drift or divide them into several smaller clusters.

  • Backfill carefully, firm the soil gently and water once to settle it around the bulbs.

  • For containers, use peat-free multipurpose compost mixed with grit and choose a frost-resistant pot with generous drainage holes.

Watering, Feeding and Flowering Care

Triteleia requires moderate moisture while producing leaves and flowers but prefers relatively dry conditions after its foliage dies back. Good drainage remains essential throughout the year.

  • Water after planting if the soil is dry. Avoid repeated watering during wet autumn or winter conditions.

  • Check containers periodically because pots positioned beneath roof overhangs may receive little natural rainfall.

  • Keep container compost lightly moist during active growth without leaving it saturated. Empty saucers and decorative outer pots promptly.

  • Increase watering when shoots emerge and flower stems begin developing, especially during prolonged dry spring weather.

  • Apply a balanced bulb fertiliser as growth appears if the soil is poor or the bulbs are growing in containers.

  • A high-potassium liquid feed every two weeks during active growth can support flowering and strengthen the bulbs for the following season.

  • Stop feeding when the foliage begins to yellow naturally.

  • Protect emerging shoots from slugs and snails, which may damage young leaves and developing flower stems.

  • Provide discreet support if the plants become tall or are growing in an exposed location.

  • Cut flowers when several buds in each cluster have opened. Leave as much foliage as possible to continue feeding the bulbs.

  • Deadhead fading flowers if seed production is not required, directing the plant’s energy back into bulb development.

Aftercare and Future Flowering

Correct aftercare allows ‘Koningin Fabiola’ to establish permanent clumps and produce increasingly generous displays. Winter survival is most reliable in sheltered locations with sharp drainage.

  • Allow all leaves and flower stems to remain until they turn completely yellow and begin to detach naturally.

  • Do not cut, fold or tie green foliage. The leaves must continue photosynthesising to replenish the bulbs.

  • Reduce watering gradually as the foliage dies back and the bulbs enter their summer dormancy.

  • Leave bulbs undisturbed in warm, well-drained borders where winter conditions are relatively mild.

  • Apply a dry mulch over the planting area in late autumn to protect bulbs from severe frost and excessive winter moisture.

  • In cold or waterlogged gardens, lift the bulbs after the foliage dies and store them until replanting.

  • Dry lifted bulbs in a shaded, well-ventilated location. Store them in labelled paper bags or mesh trays somewhere cool, dry and frost-free.

  • Check stored bulbs occasionally and discard any that become soft, damaged or mouldy.

  • Divide established clumps during dormancy when flowering declines or the bulbs become overcrowded.

  • Replant healthy offsets promptly at their original depth or store them under suitable dry conditions until planting time.

  • Move container-grown bulbs beneath shelter during prolonged winter rain, ensuring the compost never becomes completely dry.

  • Repot container displays every two or three years using fresh, free-draining compost.

  • Wear gloves when handling bulbs if you have sensitive skin, and keep them away from children and pets.

  • With full sun, sharp drainage, moderate watering and protection from severe winter conditions, twenty Triteleia ‘Koningin Fabiola’ bulbs will provide graceful blue flowers and dependable early-summer colour for years
