Planting

When to plant: Plant bulbs in autumn (September to November), before the ground freezes.
-
Depth & spacing: Plant 10–15cm deep and 8–10cm apart.
-
Grouping: For the best visual effect, plant in clusters of 10 or more.
-
Containers: Use a multipurpose compost with added grit for drainage.
Watering & Feeding
-
Water bulbs after planting to help establish roots.
-
During spring, water only in dry conditions, particularly for containers.
-
Add a slow-release bulb fertiliser in early spring as shoots emerge.
Aftercare
-
Deadhead spent blooms but leave foliage to die back naturally.
-
Do not tie or cut leaves early, as they feed the bulbs for the next year.
-
Bulbs may be lifted after foliage dies down, dried, and replanted in autumn, though many gardeners treat tulips as annuals for best performance.
Protection
-
Fully hardy in the ground, but potted tulips may benefit from shelter in severe frost.
-
Protect from waterlogged soils, which can cause bulb rot.
-
Watch for slugs or snails feeding on emerging shoots in early spring.
