Planting Tulipa fosteriana Mix Bulbs

A ten-pack of mixed Tulipa fosteriana bulbs provides an early display of large, brightly coloured spring flowers. Commonly known as Fosteriana or Emperor tulips, these sturdy bulbs usually flower earlier than many other tulip groups. Their strong stems and broad foliage make them suitable for borders, containers, rock gardens and natural-looking drifts.

  • Plant the bulbs during autumn, ideally from October to December, before the ground becomes frozen or waterlogged.

  • Choose a position in full sun. Light partial shade is tolerated, but strong light encourages sturdy stems, reliable flowering and good bulb development.

  • Select fertile, well-drained soil. Tulip bulbs are vulnerable to rot when planted in ground that remains wet during winter.

  • Improve heavy clay with organic matter and horticultural grit. Raised beds or containers may be more suitable where drainage cannot be improved sufficiently.

  • Dig individual holes or one wider planting area approximately 10–15 cm deep. As a general rule, cover each bulb with soil measuring two to three times the bulb’s height.

  • Position every bulb with its pointed end facing upwards and its flatter root plate at the bottom.

  • Space the bulbs approximately 8–12 cm apart. For a natural display, arrange them in irregular groups instead of straight rows.

  • Place all ten bulbs in one generous cluster or divide them between smaller groups, depending on the desired effect.

  • Backfill carefully, firm the soil gently and water once to settle it around the bulbs.

  • For containers, use peat-free multipurpose compost mixed with grit and choose a frost-resistant pot with drainage holes.

Watering, Feeding and Flowering Care

Tulipa fosteriana bulbs need relatively little attention while dormant. Their main requirements are moisture during active growth and free drainage throughout winter.

  • Water after planting if the soil is dry. Bulbs planted in open ground will usually receive sufficient moisture from seasonal rainfall.

  • Check containers periodically during autumn and winter, especially when they are positioned beneath roof overhangs where rain cannot reach them.

  • Keep the compost lightly moist without saturating it. Never allow containers to stand permanently in water.

  • Increase watering when shoots appear in spring, particularly during prolonged dry weather.

  • Apply a balanced bulb fertiliser as growth emerges. A high-potassium feed after flowering can help strengthen bulbs for the following season.

  • Avoid excessive nitrogen, which may encourage soft foliage and weak stems rather than healthy flowers.

  • Stop feeding once the foliage begins to turn yellow naturally.

  • Protect emerging shoots from slugs and snails, which can damage young leaves and flower buds.

  • Move containers into a prominent position as the buds begin opening. Rotate pots occasionally to encourage balanced, upright growth.

  • Remove individual blooms if they are damaged by severe weather, but retain all healthy leaves and stems.

Aftercare and Future Flowering

Fosteriana tulips are often more dependable in subsequent years than many highly bred tulip types. Correct aftercare gives the bulbs the best chance of returning and flowering again.

  • Remove faded flower heads once the petals fall. This prevents seed production and directs energy back into the bulb.

  • Leave the stems and foliage untouched until they turn completely yellow and begin to die back naturally.

  • Do not tie, fold or cut green leaves. The foliage must continue photosynthesising to replenish the bulb’s stored energy.

  • Reduce watering as the leaves die down. Dormant bulbs prefer relatively dry conditions during summer.

  • Leave bulbs in the ground where the soil remains well drained and the planting position will not be heavily watered.

  • Lift bulbs after the foliage dies if the soil becomes wet during summer or if the planting area is needed for other plants.

  • Dry lifted bulbs in a well-ventilated, shaded place. Store them in paper bags or mesh trays somewhere cool, dry and frost-free until autumn.

  • Remove and discard bulbs that are soft, mouldy or badly damaged before storing or replanting.

  • Protect bulbs from squirrels and rodents by covering the planting area with secured wire mesh immediately after planting.

  • Clean containers after the foliage dies back and ensure dormant bulbs are not hidden beneath plants requiring frequent summer watering.

  • Wear gloves if you have sensitive skin, as handling tulip bulbs may cause irritation. Tulips are harmful if eaten and should be kept away from children and pets.

  • With autumn planting, full sun, good drainage and patient foliage aftercare, a ten-pack of Tulipa fosteriana bulbs can provide bold early-spring colour for several seasons
