Description

Overview and Features

Veronica spicata, also known as spiked speedwell, is a classic border perennial grown for its vivid flower spikes, neat clumping habit, and long blooming period. A Veronica spicata mix typically includes blue, purple, pink, and white varieties, offering a striking and diverse palette that suits a range of garden styles.

These plants bloom profusely in summer, creating vertical interest and attracting bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Their tidy habit and strong stems make them ideal for borders, containers, and cut flower gardens.

  • Height: 30–60 cm depending on variety

  • Spread: 30–45 cm

  • Flowers: Tapered spikes of small blooms in mixed colours

  • Foliage: Narrow, lance-shaped green leaves forming a low-growing mound

  • Bloom time: June to August, with possible repeat bloom if deadheaded

  • Pollinator-friendly: Highly attractive to bees and butterflies

Planting and Soil Requirements

Veronica spicata is easy to grow and performs well in sunny garden conditions. It appreciates well-drained soil and is suited to a variety of locations.

  • Light Requirements:

    • Prefers full sun for best flower production

    • Tolerates light shade, though stems may become leggy

  • Soil Needs:

    • Performs best in moist but well-drained soil

    • Tolerant of a range of soils including loam, chalk, and sandy substrates

    • Avoid heavy clay or standing water

  • Planting Tips:

    • Plant in spring or early autumn

    • Space plants 30 cm apart to allow airflow and prevent mildew

    • Mix colours within a bed for a vibrant, naturalistic effect

Watering, Feeding, and Maintenance

With minimal upkeep, Veronica spicata delivers a reliable and colourful summer display that can return year after year.

  • Watering:

    • Water regularly when newly planted

    • Once established, drought-tolerant—but will perform better with consistent moisture

    • Avoid overwatering in heavy soils

  • Feeding:

    • Feed in spring with a general-purpose fertiliser

    • Optional light feeding after first flush of blooms to promote a second wave

  • Deadheading and Pruning:

    • Deadhead spent blooms to extend flowering period

    • After flowering, cut back stems to basal foliage to tidy appearance and encourage fresh growth

    • In early spring, remove dead foliage to make way for new shoots

Garden Uses and Design Combinations

Veronica spicata mix adds texture, colour, and vertical interest to planting schemes. Its compact habit suits both modern and cottage-style gardens.

  • Best Uses:

    • Front or middle of perennial borders

    • Mixed containers and pots

    • Cut flower gardens

    • Pollinator-friendly beds and wildlife planting

  • Companion Plants:

    • Pairs well with Salvia, Coreopsis, Nepeta, Rudbeckia, Echinacea, and Sedum

    • Excellent alongside grasses like Festuca glauca or Heuchera for contrasting textures

    • Works well in blue-and-white schemes, or vibrant mixes with pink and gold blooms

Hardiness and Long-Term Care

  • Hardiness:

    • Hardy to RHS H5 (down to –15°C); suitable for most areas in the UK and Ireland

    • Returns reliably each year if given basic care

  • Winter Care:

    • Cut back to ground level in late autumn or early spring

    • Apply a mulch layer in autumn to insulate roots and retain soil moisture

    • In containers, protect from excess winter wet

  • Pests and Problems:

    • Generally disease-free

    • May be susceptible to powdery mildew in humid conditions—ensure good air circulation

    • Watch for slugs on young growth in early spring
