Planting & Positioning

• Viburnum tinus ‘Spirit’ is a compact, evergreen shrub valued for its glossy green foliage and clusters of pink buds that open to white flowers from autumn through spring.

• Ideal for borders, low hedging, patio containers, or adding winter colour to mixed planting schemes.

• Plant in full sun or partial shade. It flowers most freely with good light but tolerates semi-shaded positions.

• Prefers well-drained soil and adapts to most soil types, including chalk and clay, provided drainage is adequate.

• Avoid sites that remain waterlogged during winter.

• Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and the same depth as the pot.

• Position the plant so the top of the root ball sits level with the surrounding soil.

• Backfill, firm gently, and water thoroughly after planting.

• Apply a mulch around the base to conserve moisture and suppress weeds, keeping it clear of the main stems.

• Choose a position sheltered from cold, drying winds in very exposed gardens.

Viburnum tinus ‘Spirit’ is particularly valuable for winter interest, providing flowers when little else is in bloom.

Watering, Feeding & General Care

• Water regularly during the first growing season to help establish a strong root system.

• Once established, it is moderately drought tolerant but benefits from watering during prolonged dry spells.

• Container-grown plants will require more frequent watering, especially in summer.

• Feed in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser to encourage healthy growth and abundant flowering.

• Alternatively, apply well-rotted compost or organic matter around the base annually.

• Avoid excessive feeding, which may produce soft growth.

• Keep the area around the base weed free to reduce competition for nutrients and moisture.

• Flowering typically begins in late autumn and continues through winter into early spring, followed by blue-black berries if pollinated.

This variety is attractive to pollinators during mild winter days and adds seasonal colour to the garden.

Pruning, Maintenance & Seasonal Interest

• Viburnum tinus ‘Spirit’ requires minimal pruning.

• Lightly trim after flowering in spring to maintain a compact shape.

• Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches as needed.

• Avoid heavy pruning in autumn, as this may remove developing flower buds.

• In colder regions, protect young plants during severe frost with horticultural fleece if necessary.

• Check occasionally for pests such as aphids or viburnum beetle and treat promptly if required.

• Refresh mulch each spring to help retain moisture and improve soil condition.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
