General Information

Weigela is a versatile and resilient genus, originally native to East Asia, known for its colourful flowers and strong garden performance. The variety ‘Nana Purpurea’ is one of the most popular due to its compact growth and purple foliage.

  • Habit: Dense, bushy deciduous shrub with a rounded shape.

  • Height & spread: Typically grows 1–1.2m tall and wide, making it suitable for small to medium gardens.

  • Foliage: Dark purple-bronze leaves provide excellent contrast to green plants.

  • Flowers: Rosy-pink, trumpet-shaped blooms produced in clusters along the stems.

  • Flowering season: May–June, with occasional repeat flowers later in summer.

  • Position: Prefers full sun for the best foliage colour and most flowers; tolerates light shade.

  • Soil: Any fertile, well-drained soil, including chalk, clay, or loam.

  • Hardiness: Fully hardy across the UK and Ireland.

  • Uses: Perfect for mixed borders, low hedging, container planting, or as a specimen in small gardens.

Its combination of richly coloured foliage and cheerful flowers ensures it stands out as a feature plant through spring and summer.

Care Guide

Weigela ‘Nana Purpurea’ is an easy-care shrub that requires very little to thrive once established.

Planting

  • When to plant: Best in spring or autumn, though container-grown plants can be planted at any time.

  • Depth & spacing: Plant at the same depth as in the pot; space 1–1.2m apart in borders.

  • Preparation: Improve soil with compost before planting; ensure good drainage.

Watering & Feeding

  • Water regularly in the first year to establish roots.

  • Once mature, it is drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional watering in dry periods.

  • Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring to encourage growth and flowers.

Pruning & Maintenance

  • Prune immediately after flowering (June–July) to maintain a neat shape.

  • Remove a few older stems at the base every 2–3 years to rejuvenate the shrub.

  • Avoid pruning in late summer or autumn, as this removes next year’s flower buds.

  • Mulch in spring with compost or bark to enrich the soil and conserve moisture.

Protection

  • Fully hardy, needing no winter protection.

  • Pest- and disease-resistant, making it a very reliable choice.
