Planting Conditions and Ideal Location
-
Light Requirements: Thrives in full sun, which encourages strong growth and more prolific flowering.
-
Soil Preferences: Requires well-drained soil—gritty or sandy soil types are ideal. Heavy clay should be improved with grit to enhance drainage.
-
pH Range: Tolerates a range from slightly acidic to alkaline (pH 6.0–8.0).
-
Moisture Needs: Prefers drier conditions; waterlogged soil can cause root rot.
-
Planting Time: Best planted in spring or early autumn so roots can establish before extreme temperatures.
-
Spacing: Allow 1–1.5 metres between plants, depending on the mature spread of the variety.
-
Positioning Tips: Ideal for rock gardens, architectural borders, or coastal planting where its drought tolerance shines.
-
Shelter Needs: Very hardy once established; tolerates wind and salt spray, making it suitable for exposed gardens.
-
Container Growing: Performs well in large pots with a free-draining compost mix; ensure good drainage holes.
Routine Care, Feeding, and Seasonal Maintenance
-
Watering:
-
Water sparingly—overwatering is a common cause of decline.
-
In summer, water only during extended dry spells.
-
Container-grown plants need more frequent watering but must never stand in water.
-
-
Feeding: Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in spring to support healthy foliage and flowering.
-
Pruning:
-
Remove dead or damaged leaves as needed to maintain appearance.
-
After flowering, cut spent flower stalks down to the base.
-
-
Mulching: In ground plantings generally do not need mulch, but in colder regions, a light winter mulch can help protect roots.
-
Pest and Disease Resistance: Naturally resistant to most pests; occasionally may be affected by scale insects or fungal spots—treat promptly if needed.
-
Winter Care: Most hardy varieties withstand frost well; container plants may need protection in severe cold.
-
Weed Control: Keep the area around the base clear to reduce competition and avoid moisture build-up.
Ornamental Features, Seasonal Interest, and Garden Uses
-
Foliage: Evergreen sword-like leaves, often with sharp tips; colours range from green to blue-green depending on the variety.

-
