Planting & Positioning
-
Acanthus ‘Whitewater’ is a striking architectural perennial grown primarily for its dramatic variegated foliage, splashed in green, cream, and silver tones.
-
Ideal for adding bold texture to borders, woodland edges, and contemporary planting schemes.
-
Best planted in full sun or light partial shade.
-
In hotter positions, some light afternoon shade can help prevent leaf scorch.
-
Prefers fertile, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter.
-
Avoid heavy, permanently waterlogged soils, particularly during winter.
-
Dig a hole slightly wider and the same depth as the pot.
-
Position the plant so the top of the root ball sits level with the soil surface.
-
Backfill with compost-enriched soil, firm gently, and water thoroughly.
-
Allow adequate space, as mature plants form large clumps with impressive foliage spread.
This variety makes an excellent focal point and contrasts beautifully with finer-textured plants.
Watering, Feeding & Growth
-
Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a strong root system.
-
Keep soil moist but not waterlogged while plants settle in.
-
Once established, Acanthus is moderately drought tolerant but benefits from watering during prolonged dry spells.
-
Feed in spring with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser to encourage strong leaf growth.
-
Alternatively, apply well-rotted compost around the base annually.
-
Avoid excessive feeding, which may lead to overly soft growth.
-
Tall flower spikes with white to pale mauve blooms may appear in summer on mature plants.
-
Stems can reach significant height and may benefit from shelter in exposed gardens.
The bold foliage provides long-lasting structure from spring through autumn.
Pruning, Maintenance & Winter Care
-
Remove spent flower spikes after blooming to tidy the plant and prevent unwanted self-seeding.
-
Cut back faded foliage in late autumn once it has naturally died down.
-
In milder climates, some foliage may remain through winter.
-
Apply a mulch in autumn in colder areas to protect roots from severe frost.
-
Acanthus develops deep roots and does not like to be moved once established.
-
Wear gloves when handling, as leaf edges can be sharp.
-
Generally pest resistant and low maintenance when planted in suitable conditions.
With good soil, moderate moisture, and space to grow, Acanthus ‘Whitewater’ will provide dramatic variegated foliage and architectural interest, making it a standout feature in borders and structured garden designs.
