Description and Characteristics

A Heuchera mix is a selection of multiple colourful foliage cultivars of Heuchera, a perennial plant widely valued for its ornamental, evergreen leaves, compact form, and ease of care. These mixes combine a range of leaf colours—from vibrant lime green and golden amber to deep plum, burgundy, and near-black—offering a long-season display of colour and texture even in shaded areas.

The foliage in a Heuchera mix is typically lobed, ruffled, or veined, often with a glossy or matte finish. Some popular cultivars often included in mixed trays or beds are:

• 'Palace Purple' – deep burgundy

• 'Caramel' – soft apricot and amber tones

• 'Lime Marmalade' – bright chartreuse

• 'Obsidian' – glossy black-purple

• 'Berry Smoothie' – raspberry pink

• 'Silver Scrolls' – silvery leaves with deep veining

From late spring to early summer, Heucheras send up slender flower stems with sprays of small bell-shaped blooms, usually in white, pink, or red. These are not the main feature, but they attract bees and pollinators.

• A mix of compact, mounding perennials for shade or part sun

• Foliage colours range from lime, caramel, plum, silver, to burgundy

• Grows to 25–45 cm tall and up to 50 cm wide

• Blooms in late spring to mid-summer, with pollinator-friendly flowers

Growing Conditions and Maintenance

Heuchera varieties in a mixed planting are low-maintenance, resilient, and adaptable to both containers and garden beds. Their primary requirement is well-drained soil and protection from extremes of sun and moisture.

• Light Requirements:

  • Perform best in partial shade to dappled light

  • Lighter-coloured varieties (lime, yellow) prefer some morning sun

  • Darker-leaved varieties do well in deeper shade, but avoid full, dense shade

• Soil Preferences:

  • Requires moist but well-drained soil, rich in organic matter

  • Tolerates a range of pH, but prefers slightly acidic to neutral soil

  • In heavy soils, mix in grit or compost to improve drainage

• Watering Needs:

  • Water regularly until established

  • Keep soil consistently moist, but do not allow to become waterlogged

  • In containers, water more frequently during warm months

• Feeding:

  • Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring

  • For potted plants, use liquid feed every 4–6 weeks during the growing season

• Pruning and Maintenance:

  • Remove old, tired leaves in early spring or after flowering

  • Deadhead flower stalks after blooming to tidy the plant

  • Divide clumps every 3–4 years to rejuvenate and prevent overcrowding

• Winter Care:

  • Hardy in zones 4–9 (RHS H5–H6) depending on variety

  • Evergreen in mild winters; may go semi-dormant in cold weather

  • In exposed sites, mulch lightly in late autumn to protect roots

The in-Store delivery charge will vary compared with online, in-store delivery charge is done on a case by case basis.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
