Description and Characteristics

Agapanthus ‘Double Diamond’ is a compact, dwarf evergreen variety of African Lily, treasured for its pure white, double blooms and neat, clump-forming growth. Each rounded flowerhead consists of multiple layers of semi-double, trumpet-shaped flowers with crisp white petals, giving the plant a lush and elegant appearance during its summer blooming period.

This cultivar is significantly shorter than traditional agapanthus types, typically reaching only 20–30 cm in height, making it ideal for containers, front-of-border plantings, and small gardens. Its dark green, strap-like foliage forms a dense mound, acting as an attractive base even when the plant is not in flower.

Flowering typically occurs from June through August, and because of its tidy habit and floriferous nature, ‘Double Diamond’ is also a popular choice for urban patios, courtyards, and balcony gardens.

Growing Conditions and Maintenance

Agapanthus ‘Double Diamond’ is easy to grow with minimal maintenance. It thrives in full sun, with free-draining soil, and benefits from regular feeding to encourage strong blooming.

• Light Requirements:

  • Requires full sun (at least 6 hours/day) for best flowering

  • Can tolerate light shade but may bloom less freely

• Soil Preferences:

  • Prefers well-drained, fertile soil

  • Tolerates sandy, chalky, or loamy soil types

  • In containers, use a loam-based compost with added grit for improved drainage

• Watering Needs:

  • Keep soil evenly moist during the growing season, especially in pots

  • Allow top layer of soil to dry between waterings

  • Reduce watering in winter and avoid waterlogged conditions

• Feeding:

  • Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring as growth begins

  • Use a high-potash liquid fertiliser (e.g. tomato feed) every 2–3 weeks during flowering to enhance bloom production

  • Avoid overfeeding with nitrogen, which encourages leaf growth over flowers

• Deadheading and Pruning:

  • Remove spent flowers to encourage tidy growth and potential reblooming

  • Cut back flower stems after blooming finishes

  • Clean away any yellow or damaged leaves as needed

• Winter Care:

  • Evergreen in mild climates (Zones 8–10); apply light mulch in late autumn

  • In colder zones, grow in containers and move to a frost-free area in winter

  • Protect roots from freezing by insulating pots or placing in an unheated greenhouse

The in-Store delivery charge will vary compared with online, in-store delivery charge is done on a case by case basis.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.
 

Click & Collect

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
