Description

Description and Characteristics

Agapanthus ‘Ice Lolly’ is a striking compact bicolour African Lily, renowned for its unique white and violet-blue blooms that resemble a two-tone frozen treat—hence the playful name. Each flower cluster features trumpet-shaped florets with bright white bases and vibrant lavender-blue tips, displayed in dense, rounded umbels that sit above neat mounds of strappy green foliage.

This variety is a standout in the garden thanks to both its bold flower contrast and compact growth habit, typically reaching just 40–60 cm in height, with a spread of around 40–50 cm. It blooms from mid to late summer and is ideal for front-of-border planting, pots, or balcony gardens.

Like all Agapanthus, 'Ice Lolly' is loved by bees, butterflies, and hoverflies, and its tidy size and multiple stems make it perfect for contemporary displays, pollinator planting, or urban patios.

  • Distinctive white and lavender-blue bicolour flowers

  • Rounded flowerheads held on upright stems

  • Height: 40–60 cm; Spread: 40–50 cm

  • Flowering period: July to September

  • Excellent for containers, low borders, and cutting gardens

  • Attractive to pollinators and low-maintenance

Growing Conditions and Maintenance

Agapanthus ‘Ice Lolly’ is a reliable, easy-care perennial that performs best in sunny, well-drained positions. Its compact form and floriferous nature make it well-suited to both garden beds and containers.

  • Light Requirements:

    • Thrives in full sun (6+ hours daily)

    • Will tolerate light shade, but flowering may be reduced

  • Soil Requirements:

    • Prefers well-drained, fertile soil

    • Tolerates sandy, loamy, or chalky substrates

    • Avoid heavy clay or waterlogged areas

  • Watering Needs:

    • Water regularly during dry spells, particularly in containers

    • Allow the topsoil to dry slightly between waterings

    • Reduce watering in autumn and during dormancy

  • Feeding:

    • Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring

    • During flowering, feed every 2–3 weeks with a high-potash liquid fertiliser to promote blooming

  • Deadheading and Pruning:

    • Remove spent blooms to tidy the plant and encourage further flowering

    • Cut flower stems back to the base once flowering ends

    • Remove any yellow or damaged foliage in spring

  • Winter Care:

    • Hardy in Zones 8–10; protect with mulch in colder areas

    • In frost-prone climates, grow in pots and overwinter in a sheltered space

    • Avoid overwatering in winter to prevent root rot
