Description

Overview and Features

Agapanthus, or African Lilies, are striking perennials grown for their spherical heads of trumpet-shaped flowers held high on upright stems above strap-like green or bluish-green foliage. Flowering in mid to late summer, these architectural plants are perfect for adding vertical colour and elegance to borders, pots, and contemporary gardens.

Varieties come in two main types:

  • Evergreen varieties (e.g. 'Poppin Purple', 'Northern Star') – lush year-round foliage, less hardy

  • Deciduous varieties (e.g. 'Twister', 'Navy Blue', 'Fireworks') – die back in winter, usually hardier

Colour ranges from classic blue and deep violet to white, bicolour, and even purple-pink tones, depending on variety.

  • Flowering time: July to September

  • Height: ranges from 30 cm (dwarf types) to 1.2 m (tall forms)

  • Ideal for sunny borders, gravel gardens, large containers

  • Attracts bees and butterflies

  • Excellent as cut flowers or dried arrangements

Growing Conditions and Maintenance

Agapanthus are sun-loving, drought-tolerant once established, and thrive with minimal fuss when planted in the right location.

  • Light Requirements:

    • Requires full sun (at least 6 hours per day)

    • Less flowering in shade

  • Soil Preferences:

    • Prefers free-draining soil

    • Tolerates poor, sandy, or chalky soils

    • Avoid heavy clay or soggy ground—improves flowering and prevents rot

  • Watering:

    • Water well in first season to establish

    • Once established, water moderately during dry spells

    • Container plants need regular watering in summer

  • Feeding:

    • Use a high-potash fertiliser (e.g. tomato feed) every 2–3 weeks during flowering

    • Avoid high-nitrogen feeds which encourage foliage at the expense of flowers

  • Pruning and Maintenance:

    • Remove spent flower heads to tidy and encourage new blooms

    • Cut foliage back in late autumn for deciduous types

    • Mulch crowns in colder areas or lift tender types for overwintering

  • Pot Cultivation:

    • Use loam-based compost (John Innes No. 3) with added grit for drainage

    • Agapanthus flowers better when slightly pot-bound

    • Overwinter evergreen types in a frost-free greenhouse or porch

Seasonal Use and Garden Design

Agapanthus varieties bring height, rhythm, and drama to summer displays. They are especially effective in repeated groupings, coastal schemes, and modern planting layouts.

  • Best Uses:

    • Mixed borders, gravel gardens, containers, and cut flower beds

    • Fantastic for urban gardens and low-maintenance designs

  • Companion Plants:

    • Combine with Salvia, Verbena bonariensis, Achillea, Nepeta, or ornamental grasses

    • Contrast well with silver or burgundy foliage like Heuchera or Eryngium

  • Hardiness Tips:

    • Evergreen types: Protect in winter (UK H3-H4 hardiness zones)

    • Deciduous types: Can survive down to approx. -10°C with mulch protection
