Overview and Features

Agapanthus 'Navy Blue' is a stunning deciduous variety of African lily known for its rich, deep blue flowers and vigorous, upright growth habit. The large rounded flower heads bloom on strong stems above clumps of strappy green foliage, making it a striking choice for mid-to-late summer displays.

This variety is a favourite in both contemporary and cottage gardens, offering height, movement, and bold colour. It is ideal for sunny borders, containers, or coastal gardens, and is attractive to pollinators. 'Navy Blue' typically grows to around 80–100 cm tall and 40–60 cm wide, making it suitable for both standalone use and group planting.

Growing Conditions and Maintenance

Agapanthus 'Navy Blue' is a sun-loving, low-maintenance perennial that rewards with minimal fuss, especially in well-drained soils.

  • Light Requirements:

    • Prefers full sun for maximum flowering

    • Can tolerate light shade, but with reduced bloom count

  • Soil Preferences:

    • Needs moist but well-drained soil

    • Performs best in loamy, sandy, or chalky soils

    • Avoid heavy clay or waterlogged areas

  • Watering:

    • Water regularly during dry spells in summer

    • Allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings

    • Container plants may need more frequent watering

  • Feeding:

    • Feed with a high-potash fertiliser (e.g. tomato feed) every 2–3 weeks during growing season

    • Stop feeding after flowering ends to prepare plant for dormancy

  • Pruning and Maintenance:

    • Deadhead spent blooms to encourage more flowers and maintain appearance

    • Cut back old foliage in late autumn or early spring

    • Hardy to around -10°C—mulch crowns in colder areas or lift and store

  • Container Growing Tips:

    • Ideal for pots: use loam-based compost (e.g. John Innes No. 3)

    • Plant slightly root-bound to encourage flowering

    • Overwinter containers in a sheltered spot or unheated greenhouse

Live Plants Delivery


Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
