Description

Description and Characteristics

Agapanthus ‘Poppin’ Purple’ is a vivid, compact, and reblooming evergreen African Lily, celebrated for its bold purple blooms, exceptionally long flowering season, and neat, clump-forming habit. Bred by the renowned De Wet Plant Breeders in South Africa, this variety is part of a new generation of agapanthus designed for multiple flushes of flowers, making it ideal for summer-long colour in gardens or containers.

It produces dense, rounded umbels of rich, vibrant purple, trumpet-shaped flowers held on strong stems that rise above a mound of strappy, dark green evergreen foliage. Its compact height (typically 40–50 cm) and spreading habit make it ideal for front-of-border use, patio pots, and urban gardens.

One of its key features is reblooming—it flowers early in the season and continues producing multiple flushes well into autumn, particularly when spent blooms are removed.

  • Brilliant purple flowers in rounded clusters

  • Evergreen foliage adds structure year-round in mild climates

  • Height: 40–50 cm; Spread: 40–50 cm

  • Flowering time: June through October (reblooming)

  • Ideal for containers, low borders, and pollinator-friendly gardens

  • Hardy in Zones 8–10 (protect in colder climates)

Growing Conditions and Maintenance

Agapanthus ‘Poppin’ Purple’ is highly adaptable and thrives in sunny, well-drained locations. It is especially effective in containers, where its reblooming habit can be easily managed and appreciated.

  • Light Requirements:

    • Requires full sun (minimum 6 hours/day) for optimal flowering

    • Tolerates light partial shade but may reduce blooming volume

  • Soil Preferences:

    • Grows best in well-drained, fertile soil

    • Suitable for sandy, loamy, or gritty substrates

    • In containers, use a loam-based compost with added grit

  • Watering Needs:

    • Water regularly during active growth and flowering

    • Allow soil to dry slightly between waterings

    • Reduce watering in autumn and winter to avoid root rot

  • Feeding:

    • Start with a balanced fertiliser in spring

    • From early summer, apply a high-potash fertiliser (e.g. tomato feed) every 2–3 weeks to prolong blooming

  • Deadheading and Pruning:

    • Remove spent flower heads promptly to encourage repeat blooming

    • Cut flower stems back to the base once blooms fade

    • In early spring, trim away any damaged or yellowing leaves

  • Winter Care:

    • Evergreen in mild regions; protect from hard frost in colder climates

    • In cold zones, grow in containers and overwinter indoors or in a sheltered space

    • Apply mulch around the crown in late autumn if planted in the ground

Design Applications, Companion Plants, and Pollinator Benefits

‘Poppin’ Purple’ adds bold, jewel-tone colour and a modern, structured look to planting schemes. Its reblooming nature and tidy size make it especially well-suited to urban gardens, contemporary borders, and mixed containers.

  • Design Uses:

    • Ideal for containers, front-of-border planting, urban patios, and seasonal colour beds

    • Excellent for white and purple planting schemes, Mediterranean-style gardens, and low-maintenance designs

    • A standout in modern mass plantings or repeated as edging

  • Companion Plants:

    • Combines beautifully with lavender, salvia, nepeta, gaura, eryngium, and verbena bonariensis

    • Mixes well with ornamental grasses and silver-foliage plants like Artemisia or Helichrysum

    • For containers, pair with trailing bacopa or calibrachoa for contrasting form

  • Pollinator Benefits:

    • Rich nectar source for bees, butterflies, and hoverflies

    • Extended bloom period offers long-season forage

    • A strong contributor to wildlife-friendly and urban biodiversity schemes

  • Cut Flower Qualities:

    • Excellent as a cut flower; lasts up to 7–10 days

    • Strong, upright stems and vivid colour make it a favourite in summer arrangements

  • Propagation and Longevity:

    • Divide every 4–5 years in spring or early autumn

    • Flowering may pause after division but returns robustly the following year

    • Thrives best when slightly pot-bound in containers

  • Pest and Disease Resistance:

    • Generally pest-free and disease-resistant

    • Watch for snails or slugs on young foliage

    • Avoid overly wet soil to prevent crown or root rot
