Agapanthus 'Purple Cloud' – Planting & Care Guide
About Agapanthus 'Purple Cloud'
Agapanthus 'Purple Cloud', commonly known as the African Lily or Lily of the Nile, is a striking clump-forming perennial prized for its large, rounded heads of rich violet-purple trumpet-shaped flowers held high above elegant, strap-like green foliage. Flowering from mid to late summer, it brings bold colour and architectural interest to borders, patios and containers when many other perennials are beginning to fade.
Growing to approximately 80–100cm tall in flower with a spread of 45–60cm, 'Purple Cloud' forms neat clumps that become increasingly impressive each year. Its nectar-rich blooms are highly attractive to bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects.
Planting Guide
- Plant in full sun for the best flowering.
- Prefers fertile, moist but well-drained soil.
- Suitable for loam, sandy and free-draining clay soils.
- Improve heavy soils with compost and horticultural grit before planting.
- Dig a planting hole twice the width of the root ball and the same depth.
- Position the crown just above soil level.
- Backfill with soil, firm gently and water thoroughly.
- Apply a light mulch around the plant, avoiding the crown.
- Space plants approximately 45–60cm apart.
Care & Maintenance
Agapanthus 'Purple Cloud' is easy to grow once established.
- Water regularly during the first growing season.
- Once established, water during prolonged dry periods.
