Planting Alchemilla mollis ‘Thriller’
Alchemilla mollis ‘Thriller’, commonly known as lady’s mantle, is a hardy herbaceous perennial grown for its soft, fan-shaped leaves and airy sprays of lime-green flowers. Water droplets collect attractively on the velvety foliage after rain. Its fresh colouring complements almost any planting scheme, making it useful for border edges, cottage gardens, ground cover and informal containers.
-
Choose a position in full sun or partial shade. Light shade is particularly suitable in warm gardens or where the soil dries quickly.
-
Plants grown in full sun usually flower generously but may require more frequent watering during hot weather.
-
Select fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. ‘Thriller’ adapts to clay, loam, chalk and sandy conditions if the ground is prepared appropriately.
-
Avoid permanently waterlogged locations, particularly during winter, as prolonged saturation may cause the crown and roots to decay.
-
Improve poor soil with well-rotted compost or another mature organic soil conditioner before planting.
-
Water the plant thoroughly before removing it from its container. Dig a hole slightly wider than the root ball and approximately the same depth.
-
Position the crown level with the surrounding soil. Backfill carefully, firm gently and water generously.
-
Apply a light organic mulch around the root area, leaving a clear space around the crown and emerging stems.
-
Space plants approximately 35–45 cm apart. This allows them to form attractive connected ground cover without becoming overcrowded too quickly.
Watering, Feeding and Seasonal Care
Alchemilla ‘Thriller’ is adaptable and easy to maintain after establishment. Consistent moisture encourages lush foliage and a generous flower display, although established plants tolerate short dry periods.
-
Water regularly throughout the first growing season. Apply water deeply around the root area to encourage a strong, spreading root system.
-
Continue watering established plants during prolonged dry weather, particularly when they are growing in full sun.
-
Direct water towards the soil rather than repeatedly wetting the dense foliage. Constantly damp leaves can encourage fungal problems.
-
Check container-grown plants frequently because pots dry more rapidly than garden soil during warm or windy conditions.
-
Water containers thoroughly until excess moisture drains from the base. Empty saucers and decorative outer pots promptly.
-
Apply a balanced, slow-release perennial fertiliser in spring if the soil is poor. Plants growing in fertile borders usually need little additional feeding.
-
Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can produce soft, sprawling foliage and reduce the strength of the flowering stems.
-
Renew the organic mulch annually to conserve moisture, suppress weeds and improve the soil.
-
Protect fresh spring growth from late frost where necessary, although established plants are generally very hardy.
-
The foliage dies back or becomes untidy during winter. Mark the plant’s position to prevent accidental damage while it is dormant.
Pruning and Ongoing Maintenance
Lady’s mantle can self-seed freely when faded flowers are left in place. Timely cutting back controls seedlings and often encourages a fresh display of foliage later in the season.
-
Cut off fading flower stems before seeds mature if unwanted seedlings need to be prevented.
-
After the main flowering period, shear the entire plant back firmly to just above the crown if the foliage has become flattened or untidy.
-
Water thoroughly after cutting back. Fresh leaves will usually develop and form a compact mound for the remainder of the growing season.
-
Leave selected flower heads temporarily if their soft green colouring is wanted for arrangements or naturalistic planting.
-
Remove dead, damaged or diseased leaves whenever they appear. Use clean, sharp secateurs or garden shears.
-
Cut remaining old foliage down to ground level in late winter or early spring before new shoots emerge.
-
Divide mature clumps every three or four years if they become congested, develop bare centres or spread beyond their allocated space.
-
Lift and divide in spring or early autumn, retaining healthy outer sections and replanting them immediately at their original depth.
-
Remove unwanted seedlings while they are young. Established seedlings develop strong roots and can become more difficult to lift.
-
Inspect new growth for slugs and snails, particularly during damp spring weather.
-
Powdery mildew may develop during dry conditions with poor airflow. Improve spacing, remove affected foliage and maintain consistent soil moisture.
-
Repot container plants when their roots become crowded, using fresh peat-free compost and a slightly larger pot with good drainage.
-
The flowers are useful for fresh or dried arrangements. Cut the stems when most of the small blooms have opened.
-
With sun or partial shade, reliable moisture, seasonal cutting back and occasional division, Alchemilla mollis ‘Thriller’ will provide attractive foliage, distinctive flowers and dependable ground coverage for many years.
