Description

Overview & Features

  • Allium atropurpureum is a striking ornamental onion producing dense, dome-shaped clusters of deep burgundy to purple star-shaped flowers.

  • Flowers appear in late spring to early summer, adding rich colour and strong contrast to borders.

  • Typically reaches 70–90 cm in height, making it ideal for the middle or back of borders.

  • Features narrow, strap-like foliage that dies back as flowers emerge.

  • Attractive to bees and other pollinators.

  • Excellent for cut flower arrangements and can also be dried.

  • Adds architectural structure and bold vertical interest.

  • Suitable for naturalistic planting schemes and mixed perennial borders.

This variety is valued for its intense colour and elegant, slightly flattened flower heads.

Planting & Positioning

  • Plant bulbs in autumn for flowering the following late spring or early summer.

  • Choose a position in full sun for the best flowering performance.

  • Prefers well-drained soil and does not tolerate waterlogged conditions.

  • In heavy clay soils, improve drainage by incorporating grit before planting.

  • Plant bulbs approximately 10–15 cm deep, around three times their own depth.

  • Space bulbs about 15 cm apart to allow room for growth.

  • Position bulbs with the pointed end facing upwards.

  • Ideal for borders, gravel gardens, raised beds, and container displays.

Allium atropurpureum performs best in open, sunny areas with good air circulation.

Watering, Feeding & Flowering

  • Water after planting to help settle the soil.

  • During spring growth, keep soil moderately moist but never waterlogged.

  • Once established, plants are relatively drought tolerant.

  • Avoid excessive watering during winter dormancy.

  • Feed in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser to support strong stem and flower development.

  • Avoid high-nitrogen fertilisers that may encourage foliage at the expense of blooms.

  • Flowering typically occurs in late spring to early summer.

  • Allow foliage to die back naturally after flowering to replenish the bulb for the following year.

Proper feeding and good drainage help ensure reliable repeat flowering.

Pruning, Maintenance & General Care

  • Deadhead spent flower heads if you prefer a tidy appearance.

  • Alternatively, leave seed heads in place for added architectural interest.

  • Remove yellowing foliage only once it has fully withered.

  • Divide congested clumps in autumn if flowering becomes reduced.

  • Generally pest and disease resistant when grown in well-drained soil.

  • Apply a light mulch in autumn in colder regions, ensuring bulbs remain dry.

  • Suitable for naturalising in sunny borders or meadow-style planting schemes.

With full sun and excellent drainage, Allium atropurpureum will deliver dramatic late-spring colour and elegant structure year after year.
