Overview & Features

• Allium schubertii is a dramatic ornamental onion known for its large, starburst-style flower heads.

• Produces loose, firework-like clusters of pink to lilac star-shaped flowers.

• Flowers in late spring to early summer.

• Typically reaches 40–60 cm in height, with flower heads that can span up to 30 cm across.

• Narrow grey-green foliage appears before flowering and dies back early.

• Highly attractive to bees and pollinators.

• Exceptional as a cut flower and particularly valued for dried arrangements.

• Adds bold architectural structure and a sculptural element to borders.

This variety is especially prized for its unique, airy flower form and striking visual impact.

Planting & Positioning

• Plant bulbs in autumn for flowering the following late spring or early summer.

• Choose a position in full sun for the best flowering display.

• Requires well-drained soil and will not tolerate winter wet.

• In heavy soils, improve drainage with grit or plant in raised beds.

• Plant bulbs approximately 10–15 cm deep, around three times their own depth.

• Space bulbs 20–25 cm apart to allow for the large flower head spread.

• Position bulbs with the pointed end facing upwards.

• Ideal for gravel gardens, sunny borders, and Mediterranean-style planting schemes.

Allium schubertii performs best in warm, open sites with excellent drainage.

Watering, Feeding & Flowering

• Water after planting to settle the soil.

• During active growth in spring, keep soil moderately moist but never waterlogged.

• Once established, plants are drought tolerant and require minimal watering.

• Avoid excessive watering during dormancy.

• Feed in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser to support healthy growth and flowering.

• Avoid high-nitrogen feeds, which may encourage foliage over blooms.

• Flowering typically occurs in late spring to early summer.

• Allow foliage to die back naturally to help replenish the bulb for the next season.

Good drainage and moderate feeding ensure reliable performance each year.

Pruning, Maintenance & General Care

• Deadhead after flowering if seed heads are not required.

• Alternatively, leave the dried flower heads in place for architectural interest.

• Remove yellowing foliage only once it has fully withered.

• Divide clumps in autumn if flowering reduces over time.

• Generally pest and disease resistant when grown in suitable conditions.

• Apply a light mulch in autumn in colder areas, ensuring bulbs remain dry.

• Suitable for naturalising in sunny, free-draining areas.

The in-Store delivery charge will vary compared with online, in-store delivery charge is done on a case by case basis.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.
 

Click & Collect

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
