Description and Characteristics

Alstroemeria Colorita® 'Mulan' is a compact, floriferous variety of Peruvian lily, bred specifically for container gardening, small borders, and patio displays. Part of the Colorita® series, ‘Mulan’ features a tidy, bushy habit and long-lasting, vibrant flowers in shades of rose-pink with creamy centres and dark markings, blooming continuously from late spring into autumn.

Typically reaching 25–35 cm in height and 30–40 cm in spread, 'Mulan' is valued for its exceptional bloom performance, long vase life as a cut flower, and resistance to heat and light frosts. This cultivar has become a favourite for small gardens, terraces, balconies, and mixed container arrangements, and it’s also suitable for perennial beds in milder climates.

Growing Conditions and Maintenance

Alstroemeria Colorita 'Mulan' is a low-maintenance plant that thrives with consistent care. It enjoys sunny, well-drained locations, and its tuberous root system allows for good drought resistance once established.

• Sunlight Requirements:

  • Prefers full sun to light shade

  • In very hot climates, some afternoon shade will help preserve bloom quality

• Soil Requirements:

  • Requires well-drained, fertile soil, rich in organic matter

  • Performs best in slightly acidic to neutral pH

  • Avoid heavy clay or overly wet soils, especially in winter

• Watering Needs:

  • Water regularly during active growth—keep soil evenly moist, especially in containers

  • Reduce watering in cooler months or once the plant becomes dormant

  • Ensure containers have proper drainage to prevent root rot

• Feeding and Fertilising:

  • Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring

  • Supplement with liquid fertiliser every 3–4 weeks during peak blooming

  • Do not over-fertilize, which may lead to excessive leafy growth over flowering

• Pruning and Deadheading:

  • Remove spent flowers by pulling (not cutting) the entire stem to encourage continuous blooming

  • Trim yellowing foliage as needed to keep plants tidy

  • In autumn, cut back old stems and apply mulch to protect the root zone

• Winter Care:

  • In colder climates, lift and store tubers or overwinter containers in a frost-free location

  • In mild areas, mulch heavily with straw, compost, or bark for winter protection

Alstroemeria 'Mulan' is a compact and colourful addition to summer gardens and works beautifully in both formal and informal settings. Its continuous flowering and non-sprawling habit make it versatile and easy to incorporate into small spaces.

• Design Applications:

  • Ideal for containers, raised beds, front-of-border planting, and balconies

  • Makes a striking addition to cut flower gardens

  • Also suitable for edging perennial beds and mixed seasonal displays

• Companion Plants:

  • Pairs well with compact salvias, coreopsis, nemesia, calibrachoa, or dwarf grasses

  • Combine with silver foliage plants like artemisia or helichrysum for contrast

  • Works beautifully with trailing plants in containers, such as bacopa or creeping jenny

• Pollinator and Wildlife Interest:

  • Provides nectar for bees and other beneficial insects

  • Not generally attractive to deer or rabbits

• Pests and Diseases:

  • Generally pest-resistant, though young growth may be affected by aphids or slugs

  • Ensure good air circulation to reduce the risk of fungal problems like botrytis

  • Water at the base of the plant to prevent foliage diseases

• Cut Flower Notes:

  • Stems can last up to 2–3 weeks in water

  • Pull (rather than cut) stems from the base to encourage more flowering

  • Remove lower leaves before placing in water to prevent decay

The in-Store delivery charge will vary compared with online, in-store delivery charge is done on a case by case basis.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
