Description and Characteristics

Alstroemeria Colorita® 'Tamara' is a compact, long-blooming perennial from the Colorita® series, specially bred for patio containers, small borders, and decorative displays. Known for its prolific flowering and tidy growth, 'Tamara' produces masses of white flowers delicately flushed with pale pink, often accented with a soft yellow throat and dark speckled markings typical of Alstroemeria.

Reaching 25–35 cm in height with a spread of 30–40 cm, this variety offers a bushy, clump-forming habit and elegant foliage. Its tuberous root system provides good drought resistance once established, while its strong stems support the profusion of blooms from late spring to the first frost.

Like all Alstroemerias in the Colorita® series, ‘Tamara’ combines ornamental value with impressive performance as a cut flower, lasting up to two weeks in a vase.

Growing Conditions and Maintenance

Alstroemeria 'Tamara' is easy to maintain, thrives in containers, and is well-suited for gardeners of all experience levels. It performs best in sunny locations with well-drained soil and rewards regular care with months of flowering.

• Light Requirements:

  • Prefers full sun to partial shade

  • In hotter climates, benefits from light afternoon shade to protect blooms

• Soil Preferences:

  • Requires well-drained, fertile soil

  • Thrives in slightly acidic to neutral pH levels

  • Avoid heavy clay or poorly draining soils, especially in winter

• Watering Needs:

  • Keep soil consistently moist during active growth

  • Reduce watering in autumn as plant growth slows

  • In containers, water when the top few cm of compost are dry

• Feeding and Fertilising:

  • Feed with a slow-release fertiliser in spring

  • Use a liquid fertiliser every 2–3 weeks during the blooming season to promote continuous flowering

  • Avoid overfeeding with nitrogen, which can cause leafy growth at the expense of blooms

• Deadheading and Pruning:

  • Remove faded blooms by pulling (not cutting) stems from the base—this stimulates the production of new flowers

  • Clean up dead or yellowing foliage as needed

  • Trim back old growth in late autumn or early spring

• Winter Protection:

  • In colder climates, lift and store tubers in a frost-free place

  • In milder zones, mulch thickly in late autumn to insulate roots

  • Containers should be moved under cover or protected with fleece or straw in frosty periods

  • Long vase life: 10–14 days

  • Pull stems gently from the base rather than cutting to stimulate regrowth

  • Strip lower leaves to reduce bacteria build-up in water

• Pests and Disease Resistance:

  • Generally resistant to deer and rabbits

  • May attract aphids or slugs when young—monitor and manage accordingly

  • Avoid overhead watering to reduce the risk of botrytis or leaf spot

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
